I'm new to the message board. Just went my first meeting today after about 5 months of relapse. So starting over again. Just for today! A very kind woman at the meeting I went to reached out to me today and gave me hope again. However, she had a very different drug of choice than mine and was asking me about mine. I would really like to have a sponsor to help me work through the steps, because I need that support right now. I was thinking I would like to have a sponsor who had my same drug of choice so they can relate to EXACTLY what I am going through with the financial devastation with my particular drug of choice, "The Devil's Candy" aka Crack. I know addiction is the same in many ways, but I just think it would be more helpful if I could have sponsor that was a former crack addict as well so they can relate to me better and I relate to them better. What is everyone else's opinion on having a sponsor with your former same drug of choice or not? Thanks.

yes a drug is a drug is a drug as you pretty much say. Out of control is out of control.
Personally I've had no problem with my sponsor never having done my DOnC, But I'd understand those that feel the need to share the experience exactly. One less reservation to deal with.
An option is to work with that 'very kind woman' as a 'temporary' sponsor, see how things go. What,who isn't 'temporary' in this world,afterall? ......one day at a time

Thank you for your response to my post. :) I agree a drug is a drug is a drug. I think I will take your advice and stay with the woman who reached out to me. She is awesome. She has until December until she is 1 year clean and can become an official sponsor. And you are so right, everything is temporary. Sadly. Have a nice day!

WE remember ,for us in the NA program of Recovery, Alcoholism was too limited of a term for us, so WE suffer from the Disease of Addicition. not any specific substance, an illness of body ,mind and spirit.WE find our daily journey of Recovery releasing ourselves from the grip of a hopeless dilemma,the solution of which is spiritual in Nature(as we are told in our BT).We find OUR SOLUTION(THE PROGRAM) the STEPS,worked with a Sponsor ,applied in all areas of our lives. Your Sponsor should have experience in working the STEPS and should be effectively working those in his life in order to give away what they have.You can't give away what you don't have.. DOC is another issue ,one I don't firmly believe in (and I'll keep it on me) I used whatever was available when What I liked most wasn't available and again we suffer from no specific substance BUT FROM THE DISEASE OF ADDICTION.a physical ,mental and spiritual allergy that affects all areas of our lives..Great job getting back into the mix.Find out what you will do different this time and take it ODAT...I'LL KEEP YOU IN SUPPORT AND PRAYER..Hope to hear more from you....

I have found that for me, I find an addict who has something that I want and ask them to sponsor me.
My reasons have ranged from having family all the way to just being able to laugh.
I actually just got a new sponsor yesterday because she has an inner peace that I find fascinating.
The one thing though, is find someone who has worked the steps.
and remember, just for today.
You should pick a sponsor who has what you are looking for, freedom from active addiction. Let's say you find someone who's overcome Crack and they don't have a program you are attracted to, then they probably aren't a good fit.
I once was asked to be someone's sponsor, but he only wanted me if I had five years. Don't know what happened to him, but I've never seen him again.
I've worked with people who have used Crack, heroine, pills, pot, etc. Doesn't seem to be an impediment to any of them.
Get a sponsor asap. If things don't work, get another.
