Hi and welcome to MIP.
I agree that choosing a sponsor is an important choice.
Ideally, you should be able to trust your sponsor to the point where you hold back nothing.
No horrible deed, no shameful act no evil thought should be kept in the dark.
I always suggest that people take their time asking someone to sponsor them.
I have seen too many cases where a person was disillusioned with their sponsor and dropped out of the program.
Go to different meetings, listen, talk with women before and after meetings. LISTEN
then ask ....
I wish you all health and success in recovery

Welcome to the group. Glad that you are here. You are starting out right by asking for help. The help is in the asking. Not sure how much time you have but do want to let you know that "We have never seen an addict relapse who throughly lives the program". This program promises a daily repriev from active addiction. It is important to change old playgrounds, playmates and playthings as these things will only keep you stuck. Go to at least one meeting a day for 90 days....better yet, just keep going. I went to a meeting (sometimes 2) everyday for my first five years. Get yourself numbers and call them. You don't have to worry about what to say, just make that call. Listen in the meetings to those who seem to have expierence, strength and hope to offer and seem relatively happy and when you find a person with whom you feel comfortable with...ask if they will Sponsor you. Most likely they will, unless they already have too many already. Just keep asking! Get yourself involved in service such as helping to set up or close out the meeting, making coffee, greeting the new comer, or whatever. You don't have to understand this program for it to work and it will work for you just as it has in the lives of thousands of addicts as long as you try to take suggestions, stay open-minded and willing. Don't give up, just keep coming back. There are only two times that you need to go to a meeting and that is when you want to go and when you don't want to go. Just take it one day at a time. Try not to get ahead of yourself. I know that it can be very scary and it takes a lot of work and self-examination but believe me.....it will all be worth it in time. Get connected to stay protected with other recovering addicts as there is no better help than the parrell value of one addict helping another. WE are here for you, always and welcome to a new way of life.
