Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Author unknown...

I've been there, deepest condolences.

Sorry for your loss CD.. Our family, when I was up North, had to put down our cat OREO. We first had hip surgery, then medication and then it was just a painful deteroriation of other hip and we prayed about it and chose to have him put down. My wife and I and my 2 kids ,they were in their teens, went in the room with the doctor as they gave him the shot and we took him home and buried him in the yard.. We still have pictures on the fridge....Thanx for the Rainbow Bridge story Mike,,  Peace brother............

I'm sorry for your loss. I had to put down a dog I had had for 13 years of my recovery. Very sad and difficult.

My dog is probably 18 years old (rescue animal so no known dob)
He has severe dementia...Often not even able to find his food dish. Also frequently won't eat, and has bouts of diarhea and/or vomiting.
We really love him....there is something so special about being needed in every way, by such a helpless sweet animal.
The vet said something very kind to us recently....She said "You rescued him once, you don't have to keep rescuing him"
It was her way of letting us know that if we decide "it's time" she will have no objections.
Our only question was "is he suffering"? She assured us he is not.
So we take it one day at a time.
CD....I so feel for you. I don't know what I"m going to feel like when the day finally comes.
