There are different ways to get clean. Detox/rehab would be ideal. Taking methadone could get you hooked on that drug. You can quit opioids on your own, however.
Stopping is hard, but staying stopped is harder, because most addicts who stop using for a while pick up drugs/alcohol again and go right back down the same path.
This is where Narcotics Anonymous can help. NA showed me how to get clean and stay clean.
Do yourself a favor and check out some NA meetings. Going to NA was the best decision I even made. It gave me my life back.

Weening off of drugs is something most of us have tried with little success.
I was able to detox on an outpatient basis.
But I had the support of a caring spouse, and the guidance of a good doctor.
He tapered me off of the pills I was taking, and my wife held all my pills, giving them to me as prescribed.
It took about 6 weeks, but it worked for me.
I was attending NA the whole time and continue to do so.
More and more doctors are getting certification as addiction specialists.
One of them may be able to help you.
Good luck.

Check yourself in a 28 day + program preferrablty one with a 12 step program and remember if you dont pick it up, you cant get high..... It will be difficult in the beggining but, the reward in the end is so worth it.

Hi sue, my addiction sequence is similar to yours. I began with opiods and moved up to heroin. I used suboxone to ween myself off. Perhaps you should find a sub doctor. You feel feel absolutely normal on it and it actually gave me my life back for a while. But keep in mind you will get addicted to the suboxone. But if you pick an experienced doctor then he will ween you off of it slowly and it will be MUCHHH easier to stop than the H. This worked for me, I hope it does for you. Now keep in mind that in conjunction with suboxone I was getting therapy, going to meetings, and NOT picking up. So when u stop the suboxone you MUST work the 12 steps, u must go to meetings or at least come here, you must share with other addicts, and u must get therapy and/or psychiatric medication if your doctor says its necessary. But anyways I hope this helps, take care...

Sue ,You should detox, methadone or suboxone are both addictive. They are not all that easy to get off of.The old cold turkey method in the detox uit works, painful and miserable ,but works.Detoxing is living hell but worth every bit of it.Go to meetings, stay away from other using addicts.

Hello. I am not a doctor but from expierience, I do want to tell you that if you are in a position to where you can check into a rehab/detox program, that may be your best option. Suboxone is a life saver and it does work however, it is not worth it. I have been on it before and it was easily one of my biggest regrets. It was like I had to get clean twice. I wish that I would have just gone to rehab and gotten it over with the first time. That's just my expierience though. No matter what you do, it would be in your best interest to go to a meeting, tell them what you told us, and hang onto the program like your life depends on it (because it really does). NA works if you honestly work it. NA has changed my entire outlook on life and continues to help me to stay clean and better myself, along with countless others. :)
