Newbie here!

Hi! A friend of mine referred me to this forum and I have hope that it will help in my recovery. My name is Paula and I am fourty-two years old. I have spent my entire adult years dealing with one addiction or another. In 1996, I was in a severe car wreck which has left me in a great deal of pain. So, I have been on very strong opiates for about 10 years now. Of course, with my addictive personality medicinal use quickly became abuse.

This is now day 7,8,or9 without my meds. Today is the first day Ive been able to move about. I am grateful that the symtoms have lessened. I could not handle not one more day of withdrawls.

N.A. is totally new to me. When I was a teenager I attended a couple of AA meetings but thats about it. So please give me any info. you think might help in my recovery. I am open to suggestion. Thanks in advance for you help!

Hi everyone its me again. Its 422am in the morning and I've been up all nite again for the 5th or 6th nite in a row. Up all nite bored is NOT a good place for an addict to be. Any suggestions on getting to sleep? I am feeling a little better yesterday and today, but I sure could use some sleep! A little more info. on my situation...my husband has moved out and taken our son with him while I was going through opiate withdrawl. I understand his reason for leaving for a spell whileI detox but am not sure he plans to come home. Please respond to my posts I am desperate for help!

Sleep will come. Your body is re-regulating itself and it'll take some time before you'll have normal sleep patterns. Be patient with yourself.

Find an NA meeting as soon as possible. The love and care a newcomer can experience is unparalleled. There are TONS of meetings near where you are. I'm super jealous. :) Copy and paste this website address and it will pull up a meeting list for your town:

http://www.dallasareana.org/joomla/images/meetingschedule/sched.pdf

Get yourself to a meeting and the local folks will help you through your difficulties better than any of us can. Face to face is the best! :) Get a sponsor, get phone numbers, and USE THEM!

Above all else, don't use... just for today!

Welcome to MIP.. believe me it does get better ,a day at a time..Stick around, listen to suggestions and move toward "a new way of Life" ,one better than you have ever known applying spiritual principles in your actions ,attitudes and behaviors that you learn working your own process in the rooms of NA(WITH A SPONSOR)....Have you checked out medically to ensure you are okay from a medical standpoint?Let them know you are an addict and see if you can get some relief.it will pass ,remember you only have to do this"once".........You must also focus on youer own recovery right now, cause if you half step aint gonna make no difference who comes back you wont be receptive while in the grip......WE are here for each other,Keep coming back okay.let us know how its going......smile

Hi Paula, Welcome to a new way of life, a New life. It's been over three decades since I cold turkeyed smack but can remember the withdrawals like yesterday. One day at a time it gets better. The most important thing to do is get hooked, hooked on attending NA Meetings. Attend a minimum 90 NA Meetings in 90 days. Attend 2 and 3 meetings a day if that's what it takes to keep the Monkey at bay. Form a new habit of hanging with winners, Clean addicts with a twinkle in the eye and a bounce in their step for Life. It's simple, but it ain't necessarily easy staying Clean, BUT I promise and NA promises you NEVER have to use again if you don't want to, IF you do what we did. And that is a powerful promise, having a choice not to use. NA is a set of principles written so simply we can follow them in our daily lives. The most important thing about them is, they work.

Keep Coming Back, NA Works IF you Work It.

Thanks Amanda for your input! I am looking for an NA meeting today. I actually live in Plano, Texas just outside of Dallas. I can attend meeting in Dallas but I thought I would check with you and see if you know how to find meeting in Plano. I feel like I don't want to go, thought just this message board would be enough but nearly everyone who responded to my message tells me to get to a meeting as soon as I can. Thanks again. Paula R.

Thanks MikeF. for your words of encouragement! I actuallly slept a little last nite for the first time in a week. Yahoo!!! Maybe the worst is behind me now. I see youve beeen sober for many years now. Praise God! Yes, I grew up with Christiananity and have attended Church regularly now for the last 3 years (always stoned and on pain meds.). Maybe now that I havent used I might feel the spirit in me when I go to Church instead of feeling numb. Anyhow, I just wanted to thank you and tell you I've read some of  your posts and look forward to "talking" with you. You seem to have a very caring spirit!! Thanks again, Paula.

Good Mornin' Mike M., I finally got some sleep last nite...hoping this is a new start!! So the goal of the day is to find a NA meeting that I can attend. I read your biography and seems we have a little i common. I also grew up out of the states in London, England as a teenager. You can imagine the freedom I had.  Public transportation to go anywhere I wanted without a parents consent. When I was fourteen I was drinking at pubs (lager that is much stronger than American beer) and smoking black hash. Then we moved to Dallas my senior year of highschool and for a year smoked pot and binged drank...then I was introduced to harder drugs just b4 graduating highschool. Lost myself then...attended college but never completed with only a year to go. Car wreck in 1996, ended that venture, but started a new one a long stretch of taking any kind of opiate I could get my hands on. Doctors prescribed me pain meds but after a while they weren't enough had to buy off the streets. If I couldnt find prescription opiates like yourself, I would turn to herion to keep the withdrawl symptoms at bay. Anyhow, I just wanted to thank you for your comments and look forward to any advice you have. Thanks again. Paula.

Hi Raman, thanks for your words of encouragement! Read your biography and I can relate to alot of things you said. Having grown up out of the country and my husband is a muscian who has played in bands since he was 15. So I can relate to the lifestyle of a musician, lots of drinking, drugging and women. Anyways, today is the day I will find a place to attend a NA meeting! Hoping, to find someone there that I can relate to a maybe sponset me. Not sure what that's all about...but looking forward to finding out! Thanks again, paula.

Hey woman!

There's a speaker jam (basically tons of people sharing their story throughout the day) on Saturday, September 17, 8:00am - 5:00pm

2705 W Virginia Parkway @ the Wesley United Methodist Church
McKinney, Tx 75071

I'd seriously recommend it. You don't have to say a word; you can just listen. See if what they have to say makes any sense. :)

HI Paula,
This is how it works. You ask for help, and you get suggestions from people
who have gone there before you.
Sleep was tough for me also in the beginning.
Remember 'this will pass' it does get better, as you are maybe getting a glimpse of.
I tried many things to get to sleep.
Two of the things that i had some success with were,
excercise, followed by a hot shower and clean sheets (nothing so cozy as crisp fresh sheets)
and .................................drum rollllllllllllllllll
warm milk....LOL yep. that famous childhood remedy.
It is soothing, releases some relaxing natural chemicles and helped me feel a little better.
I'm so glad you found us, and are willing to share your pain.
get to those local face to face NA meetings and let us know how it goes.
peace.
avid
