My name is Dan and I am an addict (opiates, alcohol, etc). I have 3 weeks clean and would like to move into sober living by October 1st. I am not in rehab at this time (I cant afford it, but I would go if I could). I did do a 30 day rehab 9 years ago. I have been attending AA meetiongs almost every day. I do not have a sponsor and I have never worked the steps. My circumstances are pretty desperate at the moment. I fear homelessness and/or relapse if I'm not able to change my living arrangement soon. I am employed (although I am on pretty thin ice with my job due to my addiction). I could afford my first months rent at a sober living house.
So here are some questions for people who have experience with sober living facilities:
is there typically a minimum amount of clean time required to be admitted to a sober living facility?
are most of the residents fresh out of rehab?
what is the usual length of residency? (I'd like to stay for 4 - 6 months)
would a suboxone prescription be allowed?
what should I look for and be aware of when choosing a facility?
I suggest you get in touch with the substance free houses you are interested in. They will all have different rules. prayers for your continued recovery.
Best of luck with finding housing. Narcotics Anonymous isn't probably the place to look for this type of assistance; check with your local Health and Human Services office, treatment centers, or do some research online.
Please find yourself a meeting, though. There you will find the support each one of us needs to stay clean another day. There's nothing like having someone understand what you're going through - not because they're being nice - but because they've been there, too!
NA's primary purpose is to carry the message to the addict who suffers - no more, no less. Our message is one of hope: an addict, any addict, can stop using, lose the desire to use, and find a new way to live. :)
