praying for specific things

hey everyone

this is a conflicting thing in my mind... when i pray do i pray for specific things or just general welfare???
i've been asking around to people inside and outside the rooms their opinions and it seems that they are very conflicting.......

I normally just pray for the well being of myself and anyone else who is struggling but lately I've been praying for specific things and for the most part they have come true

an example was over the christmas break I was really missing my friend who passed away in may from addictions... and I asked if he was still out there watching over me if I could have a sign.... well that night in my dreams he came to me and told me he was alright ......
I have to think that if I didn't ask for that sign I would of never felt that comfort of seeing him...
I don't know what are your guys opinion on this... i'm still pretty confused on the higher power business and how this all works

Hey Drugfree! Happy New YEAR. I believe, for me, that prayer, just like our Higher Power is personal to the individual. My faith beliefs have taught me to use a format of 1st PRAISE AND GLORY TO 'my God' 2ND tHANKSGIVING..3RD CONFESSION OF MY SIN(CHARACTER DEFECTS,SHORTCOMINGS) 4TH PETIONS FOR MY OWN NEEDS,,5TH PETITIONS FOR OTHERS.This i helps me ensure my prayer is as effectual for me that I can make it.But, on each morning as my eyes open, before I am out of bed I dive into our 3rd and 11th steps and set my day at least listening for "Gods' will for me and asking Him to give me the "power' to carry His will out.Prayer and meditation can be no more that a 24/7 conversation with the God of your understanding"For me,thats what my relationship has come to over 62 years of life..Remember this is just my stuff,God knows what you want but He will give you what you need..!  have a blessed and productive daysmile

It says in the literature that ultimately, we should pray only for knowledge of God's will for us today and the power to carry that out.
So every morning on my knees I pray for that.
But I also pray for "something".
Then, like Mike says I will spend the day talking to God. I find it most helpful when I am wrapped up in my own tangled mess of thinking.
"An addict in his own head is in a bad neighborhood"
So, if I can remember to talk to God, it puts me in a better place.
When I have issues about my higher power, i pray for the willingness to have faith.

My experience has shown me that I need to be very careful of what I pray for cause I just might get it. What I think I need is often not good for my spirit because I'm not ready for it and in the long run causes more pain than not having it. I have a long story of getting the girl I prayed for at about 4 years clean. Most painful experience in my life. Got through it clean and took what I could from it but do my best not to pray for anything specific. If we walk in faith, God will give us all that we need and never more than we can handle. I ask nothing for myself except that I be centered in Gods will and love and to be of service to those around me. I do pray for people who struggle but then again not for what I think they need. Just general blessings and comfort.
It's working much better this way. Even found love, in Gods time:)

I believe that if you pray for general things you get general results. I think if you pray for specific things you get specific results.  But that is just what I have found from my own experience.
