I guess for me the last big one was cigarettes. I'd smoked for 23 years before I gave it up. I'd always said that I'd stop smoking when I wanted to stop smoking.

Id gotten angry at a friend, was fuming mad, lit a cig, puffing away furiously, when all of a sudden it hit me: I was smoking that cig the way that I used to hit the dope! I was angry at somebody, so I was reveling in self-destructive behavior... I bet that really showed him, huh? LOL!

Then it hit me. I was NEVER going to want to stop smoking... I was ADDICTED to it!

Well, DUH!!!

The next morning I smoked the last cigarette in my pack and began my detox from nicotene. I'm over a year nicotene-free and at stressful times, I still have an occasional craving, but nothing like it used to be. I can even climb a flight of stairs without gasping for breath!!!

Hey Tisa!
good job with the fags!! When I left the Navy in 1970 I was smoking or using about 3 packs of fags a day>I had one lite in every room I went and would lite one cig from another,ON top of smoking a bag of herb everyday my lungs were like tar.(throw in some METH and Coke and yippee puff away!!)When I surrendered in 1984 THE FAGS WENT WITH EVERYTHING ELSE,i FIGURED IF i WAS GOING TO 'GET CLEAN: i WOULD GET SICK FOR EVERYTHING AT ONCE.iT WAS MORE THAN A YEAR BEFORE THE CRAVINGS STOPPED.very difficult, but worth it.NOW BELIEVE IT OR NOT WHEN I AM AROUND OTHERS SMOKE I GET very sensitive, really bothers my sinuses and makes me sick.I dont say much cause i was like a chimney blowing people out if the water in my day..I just move on..good job its amazin aint it how many things we can be wrapped up in and thats only the physical stuff, add in the mental and spiritual ,yikes glad i got somewhere to go and tell someone else bout it!! have a blessed day..good to see your sharing with all, love the questions!!        peace.smile.......

Nicotine for me too. Relapsed after 12 years, again after 8 years...now a few years off...totally committed to not smoking but it's just as cunning, baffling & powerful as any other drug...I don't need to be hyper-vigilant but I can never not be vigilant.

I love these questions. Please keep posting them. The last thing for me, which is still in the early stages of surrender is food. I am working minute to minute, hour to hour, day to day to eat in moderation and be healthy while exercising daily. I've lost three pounds and hope I continue to have the willingness to keep it up.
Hugs,
Jackie

when my boyfriend came home from a long day of work and found me past out on the floor. i had taken way to many narcotics mixed with some benzos and had fallen out of my wheelchair, and to see the look on his face. it was awful, he was scared to death, not knowing if had finally overdosed.  and when he finally got me to come to, it was really hard to breathe. i was scared.
