CLEAN time

breathe.... ok. I went to an NA meeting today that is NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS- and at least 7 people that shared were saying sober, sobriety, blah blah-  "I have 5 years sober in NA.... " UHG!!!! There is a huge identity statement hanging on the wall. but whatever! I totally said sober until someone clued me in to the clear message of NA.... so I did this. i let a few of the women that said it know that in NA we refer to ourselves as ADDICTS (as in- addicted to potentially anything) and our time in the program as CLEAN time or RECOVERY. I said it nicely but the one girl I think was annoyed. oh well. I just figure if I'm not part of the solution I'm part of the problem? I don't know. I just watch the oldtimers with what I see to be awesome recovery and serenity and i listen to them. i'm so annoyed with other NA members that b@#$h about this stuff and then don't tell the newcomer. any thoughts on the clear message of NA?? why am i so annoyed??

I never saw the point in making an issue of whether somebody uses one word or another... as long as they keep coming back.

Yes, I do agree that as members of NA we should use the proper terminology to carry a clear message of recovery, but every time I start worrying about how others are sharing or acting, it's usually cuz my spiritual condition is hinky.

Eventually as people stick around, they start using the lingo.

If they've been around more than a year or so, then perhaps something should be said... preferably by their Sponsor, IMO.

Some meetings read the Clarity Statement before a meeting, and in that case I suppose it would be up to the chairperson to say, or not say, something about it.

It it's your home group, then you might want to bring it up at a business meeting and ask the group to take a group conscience on the issue.

In all my years of recovery, Ive sen that if there is one thing that can cause tensions, it is the way we identify ourselves in meetings.
T
There are those who are ok with hearing sober and clean and those that want it to be clean and serene only, leading to many discussions around the group conscience table.

Most important considerations are the preservation of the life saving message of NA.

My gratitude speaks whenI care and I share the NA Way !
And whatever has been decided at group level must not be changed, altered or negotiated in any way. A strong leader of chairman proves invaluable in these situations.

Thankyew, thankyewverymuch!
~using pathetic Elvis impersonation~

I agree with Raman... the CRITICAL point is that the message is carried to the still-suffering addict... although, IMO all the rest is negotiable. Meetings that do not change and grow become stagnant... just as addicts who do not change and grow become stagnant.

I hate getting stagnant... my soul gets all stinky n sticky...

Thank you for this post. I hear "sober" all the time at my home group and often wonder if I am wrong for loving and caringly letting peole know we aren't "sober" but instead clean. Thank you for making me feel just a little more sane. Now what do I do when someone shares they're clean for 3 years but take methadone or suboxone daily? I'm up for asny suggestions on how to handle that.
Hugs,
Jackie
