What is addiction without reference to drugs ?

Friends and fellows,,
I want to participate in a share on basics= how does my disease manifest in clean time ?
In other words, what is addiction without th use of drugs or in reference to drugs ?

Ive had a spiritual awakening of sorts last week. Ive had incidents happen that have altered my thinking and turned an otherwise good day into one of resentment and constant repetition of a loss.
Im struggling at times to be powerless over this and would love to hear your shares on this !!
Basically I think this relates to the  " that our lives have become unmanageable" part of the first Step !
What do you think ?
Can you give some references in our literature ; and your personal experiences ?

I am greatful to have you in my recovery !
Raman an addict !!

Dear Raman, If I am not vigilantly working a program of recovery, taking inventory of myself, working the steps in my life, living with spiritual principles then yes my disease will manifest itself in EVERYTHING I am involved with.

It's tough for me to get off the surface and go down under and find the real source of discomfort , hostility and unhappiness. Theres a lot of stressors in life , daily . This brings a great deal of discomfort for me personally.

I have been working on a project on my job for 3 weeks now a bathroom situation and just wanted it finished today I got stuck with some plumbing which I dont do but wanted this job finished and couldn't get the sink to sit right because the plumber who worked on it last week didn't listen to what I thought should happen and now we may need to rip the wall back out again and I may have to redo work I've  done once already.

Is it my problem ? NOPE only if I make it mine I'm not a plumber I patch walls and ceilings and paint thats it, matter of fact I have now shifted the work back on him or anyone else who wants to give it a go and make it work, I've let it go. If I dont let this go then its like a boulder on my shoulders all day and night, not going there.

Recovery and relapse chapter:

Many times in our recovery the old bugaboos will haunt us. Life may again become meaningless, monotonous and boring. We may tire mentally in repeating our new ideas and tire physically in our new activities, yet we know that if we fail to repeat them we will surely take up our old practices. We suspect that if we do not use what we have, we will lose what we have. These times are often the periods of our greatest growth. Our minds and bodies seem tired of it all, yet the dynamic forces of change or true conversion, deep within, may be working to give us the answers that alter our inner motivations and change our lives.

Lordee yes, what he said!!! Yep...yep, yep, yep....absomatootly....Roger that...yessiree...uh huh...I'll second that. Must be something going around this week. I got it too. Came to the same conclusion....addiction still there in thinking/feeling/acting mode, and clearly it is imperative...imperative...to my sanity and sobriety...to let go and put the crudola back where it belongs, which is on so & so and not on me! And I did, and I feel so much better!!

Resentment is supposed to be the outstanding feature of the disease other than the drugs.
I say outstanding because resentments are usually caused by trying to be putstanding and then it makes me stand out.
I become an outstanding member,,which means I stand outside a meeting and judge, bitch etc.
Its a one way street,,,,spells very GRAVE danger for an addict like me !!!

Hey...my experience is that wellness comes. It usually comes with patience and clean time and a bit of work. If drugs are not active in my life today i.e I'm not using today...then what I've got is   ME.
'ME'   is about past thoughts, past hurts, past connditining, past ways of operating in the world.
If I am not happy with aspects of these things, then its time to change them.
What I do is  ... Define the question and then stay with the question...
I observe the question.
When a problem is fully understood from all angles, it usually fades for me.
I share about what I'm doing and my progress from the floor.
I keep my ears open for messages of recovery.

Hey Raman. I like John Bradshaw's definition of addiction as it pertains to other non-using activities in my life. "Addiction is a pathological relationship (Love to/Have to) to a mood altering substance or event that has life damaging consequences". This keeps things in perspective and hopefully helps me to moderate my time spent on activities like internet usage. smile.gif
