Meetings here in UK !!

Hi Dean,Vin,Tahir,Dan,Anrthony,Blithe and all you lovely folks.
I really am seeing a difference here in meetings from the way we do it in India and presumably in US.
Here they refer to each other freely in sharings.
An example when X is sharing he /she amy well say
"You said in your sharing tha etcetcetc"
Seems ok here to talk accross the table !

I think its connected with the 11th Step,,one way to feel good about myself is to go out in the country and look at nature.
One of those pics was taken outside a 13 century church,,the one with orange leaves while the other church pic is the one where the Leeds Saturday meetings held.
Said to be the crypt of St.George.
Im also thinking of another old adage=
You are as happy as you choose to be,,,
that takes me back to the Third !!
And I pray with yall whos agreeable=
God
Take our will and our lives
Guide us in our recovery
Show us how to live !

Hi, Raman- Most meetings here in Indianapolis say in the format "no cross talking or group therapy." One format even says "no sub grouping" I asked several people before anyone could even tell me what "sub grouping" was- it just means side conversations. (I guess that would be a "sub group" within the group.) Anyway, one of the things I enjoy about travel is to experience the diversity of meetings, formats, and group personalities in other areas of the country. I went to a meeting with a "popcorn" format once. The chair chooses a topic and someone to share on it, then that person chooses the next to share and gives them a different topic, and so on. It's interesting how widely diverse our fellowship is, just in the states, let alone around the world. But, for me, I find "there's no place like home." Thanks for sharing your experience in the UK.

I personally mention others' name and what they just shared at times only when I could relate or what others shared made a huge impact and gave me directions as to my personal situation at that moment. I guess that's ok to do even though usually I don't do that all the time. I generally mention "what the other member shared..." in such cases where I could relate or benefit...

It's usually not healthy to mention what someone shared when I'm gonna share something which is a different perspective or understanding of the program as this might contradict what the other has shared, or even not ok for me to mention what other has shared when I am going to share a solution to someone having shared their problem to which I could relate as that becomes group therapy in a way. That I think is not what NA is. I just share having been through the same situation/problem and how I used the program to overcome/deal with it in a neutral and general way. However, these are just my limited understanding and experiences that I have picked up from the Program.

But then, as one of us mentioned above, there are so many differences in NA meetings according to which part of the world they are held in and the influence of local culture.

I have been to meetings in an entirely different part of India where the Chair actually acted as a Group Therapy Facilitator, who after each member has shared, used to motivate and advise, and sometimes, even tell the sharer what they should do or not do. That was a bit surprising for me and very unlike NA to be a part of, in the beginning, then I just kept going to this meeting as I needed a NA meeting for myself anyway, and thus, got used to it all during my stay there smile.gif Then, I also realized that these isolated group of addicts did the best they could with whatever they could pick up from the little literature they had come across. They were not connected to other area fellowships of our region as such, and as such just did not know any better. They did not even have or come across a group booklet. They had just started NA meetings with the help of a couple of members from the other 12 Step fellowship and the culture there as such was so that the suffering addicts were usually from the local tribe and the few members who were in recovery were from the higher strata of society there. My first instinct was to tell them that this is not how it is done in NA meetings and to tell them how it should be done. But then, I realized that there were far more deeper dynamics involved in their living there. Instead, when they offered me to Chair one of their meetings, I just did it the NA way so that they all get to experience how it's done in other places. Then, I just left a copy of the Group booklet with them, asking them to just go through it. The rest was upto the Higher Power I guess...

But let me tell you, the way it worked there, IT WORKED anyway. There were so many newcomers coming into this meeting every other day, and they were cared and loved for, and many of them were indeed learning to live clean, and there was a warm relationship between the oldtimers and the newcomers that seemed just like in any other NA fellowship around the world. So, all did seem well, in their own way smile.gif

" Well,, one mans meat is another mans poison"
Like u said we never know what works for whom.
Yes I was surprised at the many " you's" in their sharing and people talking along with the sharer.
Like if id said
"Its getting colder here but im getting used to it".
Then someone may actually says" Yes,,sure is cold here " aloud.
However,,by and large,
I have been blessed with pindrop silence whenever I shared,, at two meetings I was the main share and boy was I lucky to get em laughing !!
The after that each and every one that shared said
" You know you said (that) and I think thats so true"
They usually give feedback to the main sharer.
Praise, understanding, and maybe some disagreement( thank God Ive not had to face that yet) and then they add a bit of their stories too.
It takes some getting used to,, but Im actually enjoying their appreciation.
Yea Vin,,just take a 200 $ dollar flight here and Ill drive you around
(Hopefully also drive yer nuts with my Indian style driving hahaha !!
But now I got the GPS,,all thats changed.
Ive become a very sensible driver and drive a fab British car)

that's been my  experience,  even though the "no cross talking" announcement was made.   Mostly the previous persons message is referrenced in agreement or supporting comments, or answer to thier question.

Now in AA it's a different story.  If you share in a meeting and your comments show that you're in denial or otherwise struggling with honesty, for instance, you're likely to draw some critical comments calling you on your stuff.  It may not feel good but it may change your mind about your flawed logic idea

and meetings here have a ten minute break after an hour or so,, then it goes for about another hour.
Its ok to comment on others sharings,,provided its related to being in the answer/solution.

Yes, I guess so, and provided, if how we comment on what others' share is in a loving and embracing way, and is not offensive or hurtful to the person whose share we comment on smile.gif

Now heres a real experience i ahd today of my ego becoming insignificant=
I was at Manchester with some fellows from college.
We visited Manchester United stadium,,a legand place in the football fans mind as well as a tourism wonder caus eits the one sport facility that has the highest number of visitors each years=2.7 million.
Standing there,, i felt like an automatic 7th Step was going on,,
ego became insignificant and i was really aware of some phenomena much larger than life.
And yes,,im greatful that I was there this evening,,,ask any football fan in the world and he/she will dream of visiting that place sometime or other in their lives.
Really felt relieved of a shortcoming this evening !!!

What a day that was,,,
drove 100 miles to a PI meeting.
Then took a walk on the coast.
In the meanwhile i was getting bad vibes form the newer member from UK and an NA who was a refugee.
They didnt want to walk,, so ionstead of going with the so called majority off i went for a 3 mile walk.
Trying to sort out emotions,,looking at nature and reconnecting with my real self.
Then as i sat and Meditated on the sea fom the cliffs, I knew that theres always light even in the darkest moments,,just need to look.
That last snaps like that !!!
