Is Ipecac Relapse??

I just want You guyses opinions on the issue.

I have a sponsee that is bulemic and uses Ipecac syrup to aid in making herself vomit. for those of you that dont know, Ipecac is a first aid product , that most people keep around just incase a small child injest a poisious substance, and makes you vomit in case of an emergency.

true it doesnt get you high, but its still abusing a substance.
some will argue that its a relapse in OA or an eating disorder relapse but not in na , and others may think otherwise. what do u think????

thanks

yes it is a relapse she is abusing a substance if not to get high than to do what it is not intended for it is a first aide drug or an emetic if you please instead of using her finger she is using ipecac it is not so rough as the finger less chance to rupture her throat this is an epidemic these days i have a cousin and an aunt who suffer this disease and i sometimes wonder who has it tougher them or me i am just a junkie they have image and esteem problems like no other there are parallels in both diseases 12 step programs have been shown to work for them to i will pray for your sponcee with all the rest of my na fam

Imho she should have an OA sponsor. That's a tough call from the NA side. On one hand I agree I'd agree with you and Rocky, that's it's a substance abuse. However, it's not a mood altering substance or drug so in the literal sense, I'd say no. I'd lean that way because I'd hate to see her go on a drug relapse because of the feelings of failure and wanting to "make it worthwhile" in the relapse sense. I guess my view here would be to place practicality before general principals.

On the other hand, engaging in her bulimia, is not living "clean". I'd recommend, if she's actively involved in the bulimia, that she should go to a rehab for it. That's dangerous stuff.

This sounds like eating disorder issue to me.  Quite common with eating disorders.  In this case its the outcome that is the issue, the vomitting as it relates to eating disorders is a big part of their issues.

Just imagine that if a person is using dope gets the munchies.  Is their over eating with the munchies an issue for eating disorder treatment or is it related to their drug use?  Drug use of course.

Hi there, thanks for your post. I've noticed that in NA we have hard enough time defining for ourselves if methadone, suboxone, tranquilizers, anti-depressants, etc are relapses/using. How can we decide if a non-addictive, not mind altering, not mood changing substance is a relapse. If this were not so serious, it would be hilarious. I don't mean to make light of the situation, I know lives are at stake, but this is really an outside issue as far as NA is concerned. However, you did ask for our OPINION, so please just keep in mind, that is what you are getting. Mine is this, it would sound to me like a relapse in another program, but not NA, simply because we are a fellowship of recovering DRUG users. Just my two cents. Thanks for the question and Best Wishes for your friend.

Please let your sponsee know that if she or he continues to use this they will need to be put on the HEART TRANSPLANT LIST AND DIE.  This is no joke.
