lonely up here in the arctic,,need sponser

Hi,
I'm a woman working in the arctic that just got out of treatment for prescrition drugs. In the out post town I live in is very little support for after care and sponsers.
I'm, Alaskan Native and white, have one of the better jobs in the village as a social worker, and hunt, fish and live a mostly out door life.  Don't want to change any of that, but there's no support for me up here...there are some aa meetings but that wasn't my issue. I usesd prescription drugs to the hilt and became addcted, went to WAshing state for treatment but now I'm back in no mans land with out support!!!
Need support,  susan

Hi polarbear, where i live there are a lot of meetings, 9 out of 10 of them are AA though, and unfortunately the AA community is stronger than the NA community in this town, so i go to mostly AA meetings.. and my Sponser is a member of AA.. i never had a problem with Alcohol that was visible.. Dope was my problem, but as Addicts.. and we are Addicts.. not pill addicts.. or coke addicts.. but addicts.. we have a problem with all mood-altering substances, including alcohol.. doing any of those will result in a relapse and can lead you back to your drug of choice and make it all start over again.. so i think you should go to the AA meetings if that is all there is where you live.. because you have earned a seat there just as much as you've earned a seat in NA meetings.. they have the same 12 steps and you can get the same support.. most of the recovering addicts i'm friends with go to AA meetings..

When you are at an AA meetings just replace the word "Alcohol" with "drugs" or "prescription drugs" in your head.. when i go to AA meetings i start of sharing by saying "I'm Scott and i'm an Addict" and they accept me, it's all about recovery.. not about the drugs you did.. but the recovery you want.. and we all want it..

i hope this didn't sound too preachy or whatever.. but you should deff go to the AA meetings in your town to get support.. as long as this website if you can't get to NA meetings.. best of luck to you, stick around : )

Hi Susan hugs from a male, brown skinned addict from far away tropical India.. Funny how inspite of distances i have just an experience for you=
when i came back from treatment I had no NA.  AA meetings were three a week,,I went there. I used their meetings as a place to hear out on their sharings of what worked for em with alcohol,,how they stayed sober. then i tried to use those same principles in context of my addiction to drugs.
Seems like when I look at feelings, theres a common denominator.

Lonliness, fear, resentment are 3of those that i identified as my relapse activators,so thats  what i worked on. I made it a priority to reduce these feelings in my life.,in my heart.
The Serenity Prayer took care of resentments after i wrote em down and shared.
Lonliness and fear went away after I became willing to Fellowship with these poeple,, in the fond hope that one day Ill be in a roomful of people and bravely say
"my name is Raman and I am an addict ".
These days I have lots of recovering addict in my life,,
live meetings in my home town, internet sharings as well as on phone, email and snail mail.
Theres also the NA events and one on ones. This wonderful Forum has met all my recovery needs and has facilitated my  survival and growth in my chosen profession of music.
Sharing and caring with you all on a daily basis is really the high point of my 24 hours.

This day the dreams of having addicts to share recovery with has come true,God Bles s you in your recovery too.smile

Hi Susan,

Welcome to MIP. You can most certainly find some support here as well as with some of the other online NA communities.

You might want to check out a pamphlet called "The Loner: Staying Clean in Isolation." It is available online (along with some other literature) at http://www.na.org/ips/eng/index.htm

If you like, you can tap into meetings by mail by writing to: Loner Group, PO Box 9999, Van Nuys, CA, 91409-9099

You may also enjoying receiving the daily "Just For Today" reading in your email. You can sign up at http://www.jftna.org/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi

I hope you'll keep in touch here and become a member of our little family.

Susan has emailed us twice now and she is heading to California for a week or so, a little to far away for us to meet though , I'm sure she will be checking in with us here soon in the next day or so hopefully.

Welcome home Susan.

I also have felt like that, especially when I was in my hometown fellowship where there was no one who could guide another through the Steps. Still, I found a way to do just that. Found a visiting member who could guide me through the Steps, and then later on, found my current Sponsor online through another similar NA group.

Glad you are in california for a week, Susan. Nothing like getting support from other NA members as to how they worked the program when they were left without daily NA fellowship due to various reasons.
