It's Harder Than I Thought!

Hello All,
I've been clean for 22 days (from absolutely everything) now and that's the longest time that i've clean in my entire life. I have been using something or other since 1983. I am 40 years old and have been a heroin addict for 20 years. These are the first sober days of my life and I don't know myself. It's like I woke up and found out that I had a wife, kids, mother, old and new friends....Who are these people? When did I know them? My body still aches. Is this normal? I can also hardly sleep. Everything is new. Everything is diffirent, weird too. Is this normal and, if yes, for how long?

Congratulations Magellan your a miracle today.

Time to find yourself and get to know everyone in your life, you chose them for some reason and they chose you.

First thing i'd like to share on a personal level is something I heard awhile back about getting to know other people, try to understand them, don't expect them to understand you, you are the one who is different. We get upset alot of us when people don't understand us we get frustrated with them then with ourselves, save yourself that misery and just try to understand people who are normal it makes life alot easier.

First thing I suggest is start reading the literature, heres NA's basic test http://www.earthgroupna.org/literature/basictext/

I think for kicking heroin you could be going thru some physical and mental withdrawal for some time. Keep your mind and body nourished, drink lots of water and eat good foods get your health back to where it should be and fill your mind with poisitive affirmative things, stay positive you can do this.

Welcome to the forum glad to have you with us.

Congrats Magellan on your 3 weeks and a day. What I would suggest you do with all these NEW NORMAL feelings that you're beginning to deal with, is find yourself an NA meeting, that you can get to and share your experience with other recovering addicts. The help you will receive will be unparalled with anything else you'll find and you'll also find the encouragement you need to stay on the path you've started down.

When we first get clean especially when we do it ourselves, we need help with our new emotional emergences and NA will help you find and put a meaning to what you're feeling. NA will teach you how to deal with those new feellings and how to make sense of youre new found ways. Read the Basic Text if you can but get a sponsor soon to help you understand and guide you through the steps. It sounds like you've done a great job yourself, but NA will keep it a great job and you won't have to return EVER to your drug problems, if your willing to use what we have to offer and do the leg work.

Congratulations Magellan on entering your new life of abstinence and recovery. You came to the right place. Your feelings are entirely normal as far as feeling disoriented in your own life and there is a physiological process that can take up to 6 months to adjust to kicking, long after the drugs are out of your system. Stick it out and things will get better. The program of Narcotics Anonymous offers one thing, freedom from active addiction, but it has so much more to offer. Get to as many meetings as you can and start reading the literature and working steps with a sponsor. It may also help you a lot to go out with people after meetings to talk casually about what you are going through and be reassured about how natural it is. Also feel free to join us for online meetings and chats here on this site. You are doing great! Welcome!
