Jimmy K., one of the founders of Narcotics Anonymous, began his recovery February 2, 1950 when he found Alcoholics Anonymous.
Jimmy would become involved in the founding of Narcotics Anonymous in 1953 and his contributions have forever changed the lives of countless addicts, their families and society. Among his many contributions (endless hours on the phone carrying the message, insisting on the Traditions), one of the most significant involved the wording of Step One. In 1954, Jimmy insisted that Step One be worded We admitted we were powerless over addiction This small change of one word would have enormous ramifications. By focusing on addiction, Jimmy pushed the doors of Narcotics Anonymous wide open to any addict seeking recovery by making the focus about a condition instead of a specific substance.
