Hello everyone! My name is Candice and I am new to this online forum. I have been sober for over five months now and I am trying to find an online sponsor to help me along in my recovery. I am currently on Probation for another three months and one of the mandatory regulations per my probation is that I find a sponsor. If anyone could refer me to someone I would greatly appreciate it!
WE do find that those who find sponsorship valuable get the most out of our program. In Narcotics Anonymous we suffer from the diease of addiction of which alcohol is included.Alcohol is a drug.In Alcoholics Anonymous we speak of suffering from Alcoholism and though both are drugs each program addresses the issues a little differently. You speak of being sober for 5 months, congratulations ,and your Bio speaks of sobriety ,so I could only suggest going to either www.na.org or www.aa.org and see if you can find a sponsor for yourself in the Houston area dealing with whichever program helps you continue being free from active addiction(drugs, includes alcohol) .We(keep it on me here) do believe Face To Face meetngs, sponsorship, giving back of our ESH serves us best, but if other methods need to be established then so be it..Actually my first sponsor was from A.A in '84 . but the program turned out not to be inclusive enough for me. If you are not sure what program may be for you ,MIP also has another help forum under Miracles in Progress Alcoholics Anonymous there is much more interaction with individuals on that site and may or may not be helpul to you..Good Job with your recovery remember no matter what Just Don't Use and my only other suggestion would be to take into your heart(not just what the court ordered)the idea of getting in our solution the STEPS worked with a sponsor,it is truly the healing aspect of the programs,it is the program...

Hi Canidice and welcome. I'm not going to assume that your drug of choice was alcohol I understand that in Rehabs they use the term "sober" to refer to the clarity of mind that comes from living without the influence of any intoxicating substance whether it be a drug or alcohol. I always found it odd that NA is so adamant about using the term "clean" to describe being drug free, and reacts negatively to "sober"...but that is a different topic and perhaps I'll open the discussion on another thread...This thread is about you. My opinion..... Online sponsorship/meeting attendence....is a weak substitute for face to face contact. there are reasons why it might be the only way to go...some people live in remote areas where no na meetings are available or some others may be handicapped to the point where travelling to a meeting is impossible. But those conditions do not exist for most of us and certainly there are hundreds of meetings to choose from in Houston A big part of our disease (the disease of addiction as Mike pointed out) is isolation. We tend to isolate ourselves. Using on line resources like virtual meetings and sponsors is just another way to let the disease continue to control us. There is nothing like the feeling of overcoming fear and getting warm greetings/hugs at your first NA meeting. There you will surrounded by people who have been through what you are going through. It can truly be the first really comfortable group setting for many of us. Give yourself a break...Get to a meeting. If you have transportation problems then go to NA.org...follow the link for "find a meeting" enter your location information and find your local helpline. Call the number, someone will get back to you. Tell them your situation. In an area as big as Houston I'm pretty sure someone will be willing to help you out. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.
