so how then

people make it sound so easy as if you can just make a choice and quit. so how do you quit when you don't believe you have choices but a physical addiction.

It may sound easy, but it IS NOT!!. I was discussing this with another addict tonight. Going thru the pains of stopping are physical, mental, and even spiritual.

There's no way around it. You can't avoid the pain, go under it, around it, over it....you must go thru it. Just don't use for this moment, let tomorrow take care of itself.

I think you just have to get to a place where you want to change.....and make yourself do it!  You can do it if you really want to......somehow get away from the source....change your habits.....it will take time so be patient and kind to yourself.  Try thinking of some things you are interested in doing that you may have neglected while using.  Try something new and good for you.  I don't know you, but please try.  I believe in you and so do so many others.

It is not easy. That's why we have a program and a fellowship in NA to help us quit. Quitting for me was the easy part. I stopped using drugs dozens of times. It was staying stopped that was hard. The is a "we" program not an "I" program. Though each person must do a lot hard work to recover from addiction, we don't do it alone. Try going to some in person NA meetings--soon!

We addicts know better,

Narcotics Anonymous has helped many thousands of hopeless addicts quit using and stay off drugs
Go to some meetings, talk to peoplle and ask for help
What have you got to lose?
Let us know how your doing

confuseconfuse  You just try and quit,it's not easy .It took me 8 tries to get clean in 39 years of using. I finally got sick and tired of beig sick and tired . I had no life left in me . I was a used up burnt out shell of a addict .Talking about it and letting it go are part of recovery .I had to learn the HOW of NA . Honesty ,Open-mindedness , Willingness .When I did these I learned not to fool myself anymore , to try and get on with life . I just made 7 years clean , never thought I could say that . Hey , Just Try you can do it .biggrinbiggrin

theres a saying around the rooms and i think in the literature i believe it goes like this...."when the pain of not changing is greater then changing then we do something different" we change we find a new way to live its not easy but the stronger you recovery the easier it gets with time. we do it one day at a time sometimes 5 minutes at a time, keeping it simple and in the now moment and try not to future trip....we do what it takes because we want it that badly....welcome to na.

Im with kelly. The first phrase I latched on to was in my signature.

We will change when the pain of where we are exceeds the fear of where we're going.

You have to be in more pain using than you are afraid to with drawl. Im not saying I had it the worst, but the first time I got clean, I missed a bunch of school and was curled up in my bedroom for a week. And even though I only have a few days clean now, I survived any and all with drawl sympyoms Ive ever experienced.

For me it was damn tough to finally be able to stay stopped, but one thing that helped me more than anything else is to make a decision to attend daily meetings, come hell or high water, whether I was on or off, whether I was cold turks or stoned, I just took the slogan 'keep coming back' very seriously and practiced it religiously.

There were times when there were a hundred reasons why I am not able to make a meeting on a particular day, but I made a meeting anyway, whether I had transportation or not, whether I had any money or not, whether there was a meeting available in the town or not, that's when I realized that I can go to any lengths, just like I used everyday for over many years come hell or high water
