Hi all, this is a document recieved by me from WSO in 1994. It specifically examines the motion to change references to God/ Higher Power as a gender specific entity.
Please read it, it is part of NA history and please save it as archival material.

I remember that. Lots of pro's and con's on that one.
How about the motions in 1988 ( there was more than 1 ) That nicotine and caffeine are drugs and if you use them you can't count clean time. We can't server coffee at meeting or any thing that has caffeine in it. All meetings had to be non smoking. ( at that time we could still smoke in public buildings) It was turned over to the board of trustees to make that decision. I was at the WSC when that happen.
Board of trustees decision
Yes nicotine and caffeine are drugs. ( pause and silence ) NA has no opinion on these substances at this time. But if either one of these substances causes unmanageable in your life, you are to work the steps and quit.

At the end the document calls for a discussions. I wonder what the outcome of those discussions were. Is anyone aware of any document that reflects closure on this issue? Interesting stuff. I didn't know about the caffeine and nicotene discussions either. I gues under the strict interpretation (mind or mood altering) then each qualifies....hmmmmmm....Imagine how many sick addicts would never walk through our doors if they were told that 'cigarettes and coffee are drugs and you must abstain from all drugs" I can hear the poor suffering addict "man i just want to stop being dope sick, why won't you help me?"
Well in It Works How and Why The word Him is only used 3 times 3rd ,7th and the 11th steps The word Himself is used one time in Tradition Two. We are not going to change the steps or the traditions
In the new book that may be aproved 2012 Living Clean, the word Him is only used 2 times 1 ."The phase "as we understood Him" can be a sticking point for many of us." 2. "In the third Step we make "a decision to turn our will and lives over to the the care of God as we understood Him."" The word Him is a form of religious dogma.
As for the Basic Texts, We don't want to make the same mistake like we did with the 4th edition. Not going to rewrite it. It will stand as is.
Well that is how I remember it any way. But by that time I had back off from service.
The nicotine and caffeine thing would of broken NA in two . But the Higher Power loves the addict and loves NA so things worked out for the best. I was praying while waiting for the decision to come out the way it did.
I don't have a problem with various publications bending to the political whim of the day. But the steps, traditions, and first 10 chapters of the basic text are not to be tampered with.
Hi Greg,, howdy ?? Wow,, Greg hisownself in this forum.. Amazing..
Yes Greg,, the coffee, nictotine AND SUGAR thing was called out in a publication by WSO called "What is addiction?" Im trying to find that piece, scan and post here..

Well that said and done, we're forgetting that NA is supposed to be a WorldWide Fellowship, with a vision that any addict, anywhere in the world finds recovery in their own culture....... Sadly,, many things in our Steps and Traditions are not supportive of that aim...
Take for example the addicts in India; here is a land of a billion people. And belive it or not, nearly 10 percent may be using drugs to destruction. Logically speaking, they will find NA attractive and want to recover in it. That, indeed, would be the dream come true, that all fellow brother/sister addicts all over the world, and in India, will recover in NA...
One thing that certainly isnt in line with NA World policy is the concept of God as enunciated in the Basic Text and our other literature.. The concept of God being only "Him" would be repressive, because many have as their primary diety a Female God,,, a Godess...
And moreover, thousands of Atheists would ceratinly reject wholly the notion that to recover "God" is necessary.... and Im referring not only to those atheists that do not have a religion, but also to those of a particular religion that do not have the same concept of God as has been conceptualised in the Judeo-Christian ethic....
Why is it, that from Bill. W onwards, the words of the Third Step didnt simply read "God as we understood" and simply stop there ? At least, our oldtimers like Jim, Bob, etc. ( with their more expanded conciounessess) could have done away with gender references and simply worded the Third Step as "We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood".
The contradiction is clear..... "the right to a God of your understanding is total and without any catches" ( but understand God to be Him,, is implied in the 3rd Step) "The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using" says the Third Tradition. The "It Works; how and why" section on the Traditions in the Third has words, and I quote "our message is broad enough to attract addicts of any social class or nationality". Addicts from different religious backgrounds do find it difficult to relate, especially with being of a specific gender and not open to interpretation, becuse were saying God is a "Him"....
Here in India especially, there is a very large following for the Female Higher Power.... Godess, their devotion is legion....
Another thing; NAWS has made it very difficult to translate literature into local languages, because of the long-winded process of glossary, approval etc... Gosh, in my own city of Bangalore, the mass addict hasnt been reached yet with the NA message because theres no local literature which in turn is because NAWS has insisted that litareture translations follow the "official route"; that of getting a glossary going, then having a totally un-related stranger in mainland America approve of the wording, then sending it back to that area/region and finally getting Conference approval....
This rigmarole has been in the going for nigh on 15 years now in Bangalore,,, and in the meanwhile God ( gender ??) knows how many local addicts died without ever having had a chance to recover !!!
Please read without judging, without being critical; this is simply hard core reality witnessed and expericed by a addict NA member, me, these past nearly two dozen years... the most difficult thing has been keeping that Faith in the Female Diety,,,, no matter what I had to suffer for it !!

The bright part is Ive always had answers coming up from the Basic Text itself.
I think the Third Step prayer of NA is a most brilliant prayer. It is non-gender specific, it is clear in aim and perfectly suited to a recovering addicts needs.
Simply stated, in saying "Take my will and my life, guide me in my recovery, show me how to live" my life has always changed for the better.
Situations that are seemingly overwhelming become easier to face. Emotional turmoil simply disappears, leaving me with self-esteem at having stayed serene in a crisis. Financially lost situations are getting more manageable, without the attendent rage.
Most of all, Ive learnt that the defects that cause havoc in my life can be addressed in two ways; either intellectualize the situation and try and solve it from the mental level or simply look at the facts and then ask to be guided away from that "bad-space".
Almost everytime, it's the "step-away" that works rather than control of defects..
The Third Step Prayer is also unique in that it is a prayer that emerged from addicts for the addicts.
The Serenity Prayer, though wonderous and gratifying in terms of recovery needs is common to many 12 Step Fellowships, therefore there's nothing special for an addict in it.
The Third Step Prayer, on the other hand gives me more hope and strength, reminding me that this Program is for the addict by the addict, making me feel a belonging Ive never ever felt in my life before....
Say it from your heart and soul and be ready to experience the best days of your recovery !!!

It's very challenging to be serene or peaceful at times, with certain people.... Thats what the Faith is for,,,, dont allow anyone or anything to nick yore peace and serenity !!!!
"ani't it good to know that youve got a friend,
when people can be so cold,
they'll hurt you, and they'll desert you,
and take your soul if you let them,
ah dont you let them,
you just call out my name,
and you'll know, wherever I am,
Ill come running, to see you again.
Winter, spring, summer or fall,
all you got to do is call,
and Ill be there yes I will,
you got a friend".
(Carole.K)
And it's so good to know that I got afriend in you, and you got a friend in me.

God for me is certainly an anonymous force, though God has taken many physical, visible avatars. And I choose to call God The Anonymous Force that keeps me clean and serene because that's what works best for me.
And the anonymity bit also reminds me to keep Principles before personalities. In the God-context this means the personality of the God i worship is not so relevant as the Principles that emerge for that relationship.
And in these days of hate and religious intolerance, this makes more sense...
