advice for the wife of an addict

i'm an addict and have been clean for eight months today, but its not me I'm concerned about, my friends(29)  husband(44) has been battling with addiction, on and off, since the age of 12, he has already been institutionalised and jailed  and after suffering a stroke last year. He still went back to old ways.2 feb this year he had a severe car accident, and has been clean since then. my friend who has 2 children from a previous relationship has not seen her kids in 4months and will be seeing them this weekend. however since everything she's been through with him, she wants him to go with her(to support her) to see her kids but it will be in an enviroment of drinks and joints and theres a dealer nearby(that he knows), and she cant grasp why he just cant say no.... the way she does(she never used drugs or drink), it is tearing them apart. please help!confuse

Welcome! That's a tough situation. The bottom line is that you can only get yourself clean. You can't make anyone else stop using. The best thing you can do is focus on your own recovery. Go to lots of NA meetings. You might also check out some Nar-Anon or Al-Anon meetings, which are for family members or friends of addicts/alcoholics.

We are powerless over addiction(ours AND yours), and it's made our life(lives) unmanageable.

Many people are surprised to find that Nar Anon and al anon follow the same 12 steps to freedom. I hope she can find and attend some meetings.

He had a severe car accident and has been clean? Really? No prescription pain meds?
He shouldn't be around drugs and alcohol.
But I can't help but wonder if that is the real reason he wants to stay away.
just sayin
