Gratitude

Well, my dad had back surgery yesterday and it went really well.  They had to scrape bone (due to arthritis) and fuse two vertebrae.  It took forEVER, but we were finally able to see him after about 6 hours.

Seeing my dad, 61, sitting in a hospital bed, getting fed ice chips by my mom, and really unable to do much of anything made me feel grateful for the relationship I have with my dad today.

I didn't have an ideal childhood (but then who did?) and my dad was of the abusive kind - if not physical, the emotional side.  He's a big man and to see him down for the count like this was really weird...

I'm glad to say that today my resentments towards my father have greatly lessened throughout the past few years of my recovery and I can love him for who he is today.

Today's a good day to be clean... and to be working steps!  :)

Thanks for sharing Amanda, good for you, my dad died at my age now 63,year and a half before I surrendered.I had so much to say to him ,so back when I did my 9th step I wrote a long letter, talking with him and saying things I never got to say,Put it in the eternal candle holder and have been at peace with that ever since.Give your dad a hug for me!!!smile

Update: dad's up and about, and they're thinking of discharging him today! Modern medicine keeps me baffled. They got him fitted for a walker and had him walking the halls last night. Pretty amazing considering just a day before he could barely walk from the check-in desk to the waiting room chairs...

I'm grateful to still have parents around... I know many friends of mine don't have that luxury...
