About meeting rituals...

It's often customary to take a "moment of silence for the addict who still suffers."
Is it counter-intuitive to Our Purpose to take a "moment of silence for the addict who died of their addiction"?

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob.  Good question.  Thanks.

I suppose it would be counter-intuitive to our N.A. Primary Purpose (to carry the message to the still suffering addict) to pray for those who are no longer suffering and passed on.

However, I don't believe that in the N.A. "ritualized" moment of silence is restrictive to prayers and intentions to our Primary Purpose.

For example, when asked who can we remember in our prayers, often we hear of family members who are ill, friends who are hospitalized, and children who have no say in the matter.  Yet these persons are not "the still suffering addict".  And yet we pray for them in our "moment of silence."

Praying for the deceased, in my opinion, is appropriate.

Yes, we someone have moment of silence for the still suffering addict, and for the addict who will die from their disease tonight.

What does bug me sometimes is when too often a chairperson has about a 1 maybe 2 second "moment of silence" then starts the Serenity Prayer. Then to me it is like just a rote ritual, rather than a meaningful time of reflection and prayer. I know prayer can be uncomfortable for some people, especially when new, and feel it's important to lead by example truly giving time for reflection when I chair.
