Respondents are needed for survey

Hello everyone. I previous posted a link to a study that I am conducting.  I am having a hard time with getting people to participate.  Again I have no way of know who you are or where you are from.  Right now I only have 15 who have decided to participate and I need at least 50.  I plan to pursue a doctorate degree next year and I really need to get this study complete.  I encourage you all to participate.  At least read the first page of my study to learn more about it.  Click the link below.  If it doesn't work copy and paste the link in your web browser.  Thank you.  Please disregard if you have already participated.

Ruthy I am not being nosey.  Its OK if you chose not to participate.  I am a future doctorate student and as a student we often have to engage in research.  By doing research that's how we know if certain things work or not and that how we know if something needs improvement.  I am looking to know if the 12 step program is effective and by participating it can help future students, counselors, and other professionals.  I am not asking for you to disclose who you are or to let me or others know that you have participated.  The survey is completely confidential.  Right now I have 19 participates and I need at least need 31 more participates.  The link to the survey is below.

Lol ruthy please show some tolerance here this is someone asking for help so that maybe later down the road she can help others, we dont want to give her the wrong impression of us HEH HEH

I'll take a look and see if I want to do the survey but please make this the last time you post if you've already posted the request once, thanks you very much and best of luck with your doctorate, you may need to think of other ways to get people to help ..

My own viewpoint, gathered over nearly 23 years in recovery in 12 Step Traditions, 22 in sponsorship and 21 in service and 20 years in academicia, is this;

Intensive one on one face to face interviews and ethnographic approaches are beat suited to this type of research.

Surveys are a good starting point, but making meanings of addicts experiences in recovery
through ethnographic style interviews and participant observation will reallly be more valid in terms of arriving at theory on what works and dosent in 12 Step Programs..

How do yu feel ?

And hey, yes....
in keeping with accepted norms of research ethics, you may want to do the fo0llowing, as this is a Forum for sharing between addicts.

1. Identify who you are and which university you belong in.
2. Ask for permission from the moderator to find respondents here.
3. Keep respondents in the know about what the findings were and how you can help.

Hey Sabrina,,
youve done the first of ethic,,i.e.you have fully identified yourself and your university..

Then onto the second, you do have the tacit consent of the moderator, going by his response to Ruthy's post. So that is ok.

Please give us a commitment that you will keep us informed on findings...

Thanks a lot for your interest in understanding our experiences here.

It is a stretch to call this a study, or imply it is research. It is a non-scientific survey, with no controls, no reliability, no validity, and is purely anecdotal. It cannot even be characterized as a random sample, since we who use online supports are not necessairly the same in core characteristics as those who exclusively use face-to-face meetings in the community. Anyone can take this survey multiple times, and the questions themselves are flawed. If you wish to learn about the effectivness of 12 step programs from some of the better literature, read Ernest Kurtz' Not God and Harry Tiebout's work, and go where they lead you. As far as a larger pool of potential respondents, try friendsofbill.net

Here is an excellent reference for you-the entire issue is devoted to the 12 step process-don't let the date throw you-these were cutting edge articles by the best in the field and still hold true as state-of-the art insights even today.

I took the survey. It's typical of such surveys and didn't sting or violate my anonymity at all. I wouldn't recomend it nor would I discourage it. Your call.

I will point out that self-report is all the addiction field has to go on. I think each of us know how reliable an addicts' self-report actually is.

No big deal here.

One suggestion from one member is to include my contact info.  This is also the first first page of the survey.

Thank you for your interest in my research titled The Effectiveness of the Twelve-Step Based Treatment Program. My name is Sabrina Singleton and next year I will pursue a doctorate degree in clinical mental health counseling at Mississippi State University. I am conducting a study entitled outline any limitations and the benefits of attending an Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) or Narcotic Anonymous (NA) groups that utilizes the 12-step treatment approach. I am also seeking to gain participants point of view concerning the effectiveness of the 12 step program. The results from the study will be presented as a whole in a poster format at the Mississippi Counseling Association conference in November. All information will be kept confidential and your answers will not be viewed by anyone else besides me. If you decide to participate, I have no way of knowing you decided to participate in this study. If you have already completed a residential or outpatient substance abuse treatment program and joined AA or NA in order to achieve sobriety then you are qualified to participate. You are not qualified to participate if you are currently in a residential or out patient treatment program.

The data collected will be analyzed to gain an understanding of the effectiveness of the 12-step treatment approach. Please understating that your participation is completely voluntary and no one will know that you have participated and it will not affect you in any way. I have no way of knowing who you are. You will be asked to complete the attached survey consisting of demographic questions, questions concerning any limitations to the 12 step based treatment program, and also the benefits you have gained from attending AA/NA that utilizes the 12 step approach. This survey should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. At any time during the survey you are free to discontinue your participation without prejudice. Responses are submitted anonymously so you are encouraged to be as honest as possible in responding to each item.

Should you have any questions about this study, feel free to contact me at 601-580-7770 or by email at mrs.sabrina.singleton@gmail.com. Thank you in advance for your participation. Your time and effort are greatly appreciated!

And yeah,,, Dr. Tiebout's work is seminal and influenced the 12 Step@ ers in more ways than one..

The turning pointin Bill's life however came when Dr. Carl Jung, the famous psychiatrist told him
" Ive never seen an alcoholic of your type ever et better unless they have what Id call a rearrangement of ideas and motivations".

Then the sage asked Bill to read "The Verieties of Religious experience" by the most famous American psychologist of that time, William James.

That said however, though those fabulous works by those authoratitive sources provide secondary research material, why deny the fact that the primary data, from recovering addicts, will be an advantageous thing.

Like they say, best it comes straight from the horses mouth and if'n I were Sabrina, Id also say
"I wont look a gift horse in the mouth"....he,he,,,just horsing 'round a bit, as is my wont Mrs. Singleton, but all that said, greatful we have people like you who care in their own way !!!

God Bless you and grant you great success in your research !!!
