Prescription Addict????

Hi my name is Stephanie and I am an addict!! I am 21yrs old and am in recovery. I've been in and out of the rooms for a long time && love NA and everything it stands for I also truely believe in the program.... I need to start going to meetings again after a loong relapse and am fully aware of my problem and the solutions...I was reading over the literature and all lol it makes me feel good and i was just wondering if anyone knew about anything like any information on prescription addicts??...My grandmother is also an addict and is aware that she has a problem i very much wanted to read her literature but while reading it quickly realized it didnt really pertain to her like i would have wanted it to. I would like her to go to a meeting with me and she does want help but at the same time she also has to be on the medication she is on & has not lived the "drug addict lifestyle" she abuses her medication and i was wondering if there was any literature on prescription addicts??..She knows that she is one but I would really like to have something that she can relate to like how I do when i read the literature. I'd really appreciate anything on the issue of prescription addicts...thank you very much for taking the time to read this!! Sincerely...Stephanie Shmm

Hey Stephanie! welcome  "you can have your grams relate to "WHO IS AN ADDICT "in our Basic Text.Page 3 ,5th Edition.....very simply,an addict is a man or woman who's life is controlled by drugs.     it tells us we lived to use and used to live and and were caught in the grip of a continuing and progressive illness, whose ends are always the same, jails ,institutions and death! We come in all shapes forms and styles of using, whether your mainlining dope or drinking  cough medicine: if you life is contriolled by these drugs you may qualify! There are many different types of "drug addict lifestyles"...We also have IP'S (information pamphlets and booklets that can clarify different circumstances)IP#7 Am I an addict..IP#17 For those in treatment  IP#16 For the newcomer   Pamphlet 'In times of illness(medications in recovery) and more..You can Google NA.ORG and search on literature..Keep coming back ,hope to hear more from you.Others will be on to point you in direction and suggestion...peace smile

I'm glad you're going to meetings again. As you know, NA does not focus on any particular drug. NA is a program of recovery from addiction. We are not concerned with what drug you used, how much of it you used, etc. but on how drug use caused problems in your life and what we can do to help. NA is composed of people from various backgrounds who have a common problem and common solution. I suggest your grandmother try going to meetings. Hopefully, she can relate at the very basic level of the common problem and common solution.

Hi Stephanie.
I understand you wanting information about yours and your grandmothers specific substances but you won't find it in Narcotics Anonymous. At least not in any approved literature.
You see as it says in our basic text "We are not interested in what or how much you used" The substance doesn't matter, it really doesn't. Unlike AA, Narcotics Anonymous doesn't address a specific substance. It addresses the disease of addiction.
It is very common for newcomers to seek identification based on their drug of choice, or a lifestyle. It is only after coming back for a while that we realize the true identification occurs at the level of feelings.
Is obsessing about drugs or other things part of your experience? Have you been compelled to do things (like take drugs) even though you didn't want to?
Are your feelings easily hurt, are you quick to anger, unable to tolerate discomfort, and needing of immediate relief?
Many addicts feel some or all of these things daily. We use drugs to deal with feelings of discomfort and find we can't stop, or stay stopped no matter how hard we try.
The stereo-typed drug addict lifestyle i.e. a filthy junkie living in the streets and stealing to get drugs, does of course exist. but more and more this is the exception rather than the rule. The rooms are full of people of all ages and income levels who got addicted to drugs by following a doctors prescription.
Invite Grandma to visit us. No one knows her here. She can ask questions and decide for herself. Mike, and me and a few other regulars here are in our 60's. I'm sure we can relate to her. As for you. Please keep coming back.
I love your enthusiasm.
