Hello all, I am a 38 year old opiate addict from New Zealand. I am currently in the process of tapering off the methadone programme which enabled me to stop using and stabalise my life, get a job etc. However it has been too long and it's time to get real and get clean. I have been in and out of recovery for some years now but I started going back to meetings last year and have been attending at least 5-6 a week. I was also a massive cannibis user (smoked first thing in the morning and continued till bedtime) and I thought I'd smoke the stuff till the day I died but I have really surprised myself that Ive totally given it up. Luckily for me I don't even crave it and rarely (if ever) even think about it. I was regularly visiting a site called We Speak Methadone which had some good tips for getting off the programme etc. But I decided that if I was going to be on any message board it should be more recovery orientated. At WSM they wern't too big on 12steps. Anyway thats me and I look foward to visiting this board and hearing other peoples stories. Especially ones that managed to get off Methadone and how they did it.
Hello Hemi, and welcome to the board. Go choices that you're making. This program works if you work it. Get a sponsor at one of your meetings, and start working the steps.
Welcome to Miracles In Progress, Hemi. I could relate with that Cannabis part... During my active addiction, I always dreamt of being able to stop using all drugs, except Cannabis, which I thought I'd continue to use till I die...
I like it that you explore all options of recovery support. It's very important, I believe, out of my personal experience, that addicts explore all possible paths to treatment and recovery from addiction before finding their own unique path, whatever they find more beneficial for the kind of recovery they want... I did that too, and just like you, found the 12-Step Program to be exactly what I need to turn around my life in a new way, nothing like the inside job opportunity that the Steps provide...
Keep coming back, we all need each other, fellowship hugs and love.

What they said!! Welcome-you're proof that the struggle to get off methadone does not have to exclude beginning to live a life of recovery. You may already know this, but the NA website is a great place to read the literature of the program.
