7 Years to finally get off of opiates and now on Klonopin......Very depressed

Long story short.

I was on very strong opiates for a jaw problem that morphed into taking opiates because they made me feel normal - lessed my anxiety.

After 5 years (and I worked full time in a - irony coming - pharmaceutical company), I knew I needed to get off (and wife was coming apart at the seams....which is understandable).

Got on Suboxone...Took me 3 plus years to get off of that.  Tried unsuccessfuly and then finally got off August 22nd of this year.

So I was having some anxiety and my 'addiction doctor' put my on Klonopin.

If feel like I am going down the same dark road.  My wife has just about given up on me and I feel like I have failed as a husband and a father.  I have two beautiful kids - 3 and 6.

There is probabaly a good rationale for being on Klonopin, and I had a better argument at first becuase it did really help calm me down, but now I just feel depressed.  I called my doctor yesterday - told her I'd been in bed for 3 days and she just said....'Oh, I'm sorry to hear that' and then there was this long pause like 'why did he call me'.

So today.....I ran two miles (running helped get me off the sub) and going to take some active steps to get back out of this mess.  New psyc and N/A mtgs.

I think I have some coexisting mental stuff also (depression, some OCD, anxiety) and feel like a basket case.

Anyone care to comment or offer any suggestions?

Have you read "Staying Sober"?
http://www.amazon.com/Staying-Sober-Guide-Relapse-Prevention/dp/083090459X

It's a must read. Mainly the explanation of "Paws" post acute withdraw syndrome. Paws typically lasts 6-24 months after getting totally clean. The main proponent of Paws is stress, and stress is a constant with early recovery. Going to meetings Daily, and working the 12 steps Regularly, and taking to a sponsor Regularly, will help you to learn how to reduce stress by changing the way that you live, act, and feel about yourself and others. It take work and committment that 19 out of 20 addicts aren't willing to do. As you can see, "take the pill and calling me in the morning" isn't working for you. Good job on exercise, that's the #1 treatment for depression. Add a balanced diet, vitamins, and proper rest (avoid caffienne) and you're half way there.

It's also very difficult for addicts and alcoholics to get motivated to "Work the Program" while they are in a relationship, because it's hard to focus their attention on themselves. Usually the marriage goes away before the addict acquires the gifts of "willingness and desperation" (been there and done that). Hopefully you'll not have to experience that, but you'd better get busy. If you can use every day, then you can get meetings every day. good luck brother.
