Sponsorship....HOW?

OK I have been asked by a fellow addict to be his sponsor, and he's been on his first step for 8 months. of course I said yes, I am happy to be of service. My questions is......WHAT do I do now? Try to follow the path my sponsor helped me travel or what? I did call my sponsor and asked for help, and plan to meet with him Monday night to discuss.

ANY suggestions welcome!

I was taught that I share my experience, strength, and hope. I share the lessons I learned from my own recovery. My sponsor taught me what she knew, explained the steps/traditions/concepts how she understood them and applied them to her life...but I didn't have to be so closed minded to "just" her way. I could find my own way, my own lessons, my own experiences, my own ideas. She was my guide through them, not the surrogate to learn them for me.

I think we all take away something unique from the steps, and it's that unmatched experience or perception that we share with each other. Sometimes (unfortunately, a looong time ago), I'd look at my problems and think, "I'm going through this difficulty right now so down the line I can share my experience of staying clean through it with someone that will need that type of experience." ~ wish I adamently believed that today like I used to...but you see my point.

There's a cd out Dave , by Richie K I believe. The guy is an absolute whiz at the basic text and he explains how he does it.

Its a speaker meeting and he is talking about the importance of newcomers to his continued recovery. He explains that he numbers every sentence in his basic text. I'm guessing a mechanical pencil. just a small number one thru whatever for every chapter. Each sentence gets a number. Then he sits with his sponcee and they begin reading. If there's anything they may want to discuss they write that number down..sentence by sentence they go over the first step. The process can take a couple hours or more.

This man has been clean decades and has done it through every chapter many times over. Its absolutely a joy to hear him speak of the basic text.

Its just a thought, But good ole fashioned reading and sharing between brothers is a great start.

Thanks for your service. Our gratitude speaks when we share the message.

Yes Dave, all we need to do in Sponsorship is pass on what was passed on to us by our Sponsor, and pass on what worked and works for us. That is all we have to offer, and that is how it works miraculously well... Also, I have come to understand that guiding others in their recovery is an important personal recovery tool for me. Perhaps, that's what keeps me focused and grounded 'in' the NA program. It's a win-win for both members involved in Sponsorship. It's how I apply the Twelfth Step among many other ways.

Have you got the NA literature book "Sponsorship"? In this book, there is a chapter called "To The Sponsor", that throws a lot of light on what and how, we as a Sponsor, could do. Please get a copy of this NA literature if you don't have it and give it a read. I'm sure you'll find all the guidance you need.

Above all, the best thing that my first Sponsor suggested to me when I started having Sponsees was that I seek guidance with my Sponsor as to how to guide my Sponsees in certain situations when I don't know what to do. So glad that you're meeting up with your Sponsor to discuss this, good place to start with smile.gif

Dear Anthony, is there any way that I can access this speaker tape by Richie K. Sounds interesting and attractive. Would love to hear his share on Basic Text and Sponsorship. Please pass on the link to this speaker tape if it's available online, thank you, NA Hugs.
