No matter what

"We eventually have to stand on our own feet and face life on its own terms, so why not from the start."

Basic Text p.85

Some of us feel that we should protect newcomers by telling them that, while everything used to be horrible, now we're in recovery it's all wonderful. We feel that we might scare someone away if we speak of pain or difficulties, broken marriages, being robbed, and the like. In a sincere and well-intentioned desire to carry the message, we tend to talk glowingly only about what's going well in our lives.

But most newcomers already suspect the truth, even if they've only been clean for a few days. Chances are that the "life on life's terms" the average newcomer is experiencing is quite a bit more stressful than what the average oldtimer deals with each day. If we do manage to convince a newcomer that everything becomes rosy in recovery, we had better make sure we are there to support that newcomer when something goes wrong in his or her life.

Perhaps we simply need to share realistically about how we use the resources of Narcotics Anonymous to accept "life on life's terms,' whatever those terms may be on any given day. Recovery, and life itself, contain equal parts of pain and joy. It is important to share both so the newcomer can know that we stay clean no matter what.

Just for Today: I will be honest with the newcomers I share with and let them know that, no matter what life brings, we never have to use drugs again.

great read, keep it coming. I love this , it is so true just because you are clean doesn't mean a free pass!!! but recovery is worth all the effort!!!

I proved this one yesterday, I was challenged with my own feelings and I didn't do what I would have done before. I did something different and I allowed myself to feel this pain and I got through it. I didn't like feeling it but I felt it and it was ok.

lemme see here big v , at 30 days i lost my best friend. ( no great loss ) at 60 days my wife said i was an ass as a clean addict .  at 90 days i lost my job . Then a funny thing happened. No job but lots of time for meetings . I started hitting at least 7 a week maybe up to 12. I got a sponsor and called him daily. I actually started doing real work on an actual real step.

Now at 160 days ( is that a typo ?)  I'm active more than I've been in years. I'm involved with recovering addicts daily. I'm reading the BT like its the holy grail ( and it is ) And on some days vinny, you might not believe this, I'm happy!

THis past Saturday I was up early to help an addict pick up a car. Was home twenty minutes before an addict called needing a golf partner, Got home from than in time to call sponsor. An hour later left for a meeting. Spent 1 and a half hours after meeting talking to addicts. Got home in time for an online step study. Worked on First step for an hour. Hit the hay, I was beat.

Remember all those old habits i had ? Miracle in progress man. I'm Stoked !Oh i almost forgot to mention. at least 10 prayers a day.

Yes, as a newbie I really need people to be honest. I am only making it from day to day with the readings and the meetings so the word of veterans is very very important to me right now.
