I am not sure I am in the right place. But I am looking for a chatroom to help me with my soon to be 19 yr. old son. I think he is drinking and smoking too much. He just lost a good friend in a car accident and I am freaking. Any advice?

i have been to alnon in the past for my sister. I guess I am just looking for his perspective. when do you get to the point that Mom and Dad have no influence. When is the line between having a good time and addiction crossed. And if it is crossed, what did you hear that made it your bottom. I know it differs for everyone, but I am at the point that I know it is up to him. But I do not want to give up, letting him know that I am here. What can I say or do?
Sharon its not just one thing that brings a person to the bottom, it's often a long tedious turn of events that bring a person to there knees, it takes a full admittance of defeat.
The defeat comes in 3 forms physical, spiritual and emotional.
Addiction is a stubborn foe.
What my Mom did was love me and let me know she cared deeply and worried I also knew she was worried but addiction is selfish and no very caring about others but itself and that is what will rule your sons thoughts mostly until he has a wake up call.
It's unfortunate that a parent would have to go threw this with a child a feel sad for you my Mom went threw major depression and told me she had to take medicine to sleep she worried so much about me things people said that showed me what I was doing did help me to keep trying to change but it took a lot to get me ready a lot of pain and suffering.
I think peoples prayers and God Will saved me and now I realize that Grace an undeserved gift was given to me, I did everything I could just about to kill myself yet I have survived, not everyone is so lucky unfortunately .
Theres not a lot you can do but pray and hope for the best
The Love between a Son and a Mother is stronger than anything I know. There are some hard times to go through with addiction, but love and prayer will overcome many obstacles. Without the love from my family I would be lost.

i appreciate the encouragement. it is so difficult. please hug your moms if they are still with you. and if not pray to them and let them know what it meant. i have addictions, cigs, etc. but let me tell you, i sometimes feel it is harder on those who love you. i have had siblings with addictions, but moms are connected. physically and emotionally connected. right now my worst addiction is trying to save my son from the deep inside pain this behavior can cause. see we moms have an addiction too. Love. Uncondictional Love. I think it is the hardest to beat. Please keep the comments coming they do help. I will try to keep praying. Someone told me a quick pray. Your will, Your way.
HAng in there Mom and dont lose hope I honestly dont know what else to tell you other then there are mothers out there who got threw it and there child or children are clean, me and my sister both are clean though I was the worst ever in our family, my mom is happy today but she went threw many years of dispair and fears all I did was hang on when the time was right I grabbed ahold of the program but it took many trys.
