Beginning to quit- Advice?

Hello.
I have been addicted to opiates for about 8 months. I take oxtcotin everyday and I'm tired of it. I'm tired of just feel numb or high, I want to feel like myself again, and I want to have money. I work but I feel I am just getting by. I'm starting to quit tomorrow and I hope by New Years to be down to a very very low dose or completely done. I made a chart of how much I am allowed to take each day, that hard part is sticking to it. I'm sooo afraid of withdrawl, I think I can do it but when it starts I want to die.

I really want to be clean, I'm 22 years old and I want to end now before I mess up my life to a point of no return. I take about 80-100 mgs a day. I would appreciate any help.

Hi Missy,

welcome to Miracles In Progress Group.

Wishing you all the best in your resolve to stay clean and recover smile.gif Glad you found us.

As an addict who got sick and tired of being sick and tired due to my using drugs in an attempt to change the way I felt and lived, finding help where it's available, reaching out and expressing my desire to stop using drugs was the best thing that I could have done, and I see that you've done the same smile.gif

I never had to do it alone once I found recovering addicts in Narcotics Anonymous who have been through what I had been through, who could actually understand my situation and could relate with my experiences was and is a great blessing for an addict like me. I felt so very relieved to find other addicts who have gone through it all and much worse, yet have found a way into the solution, to living clean, not having to use drugs ever again Just For Today. Coming back to this fellowship of NA and reaching out to these recovering addicts again and again on a daily basis was the greatest evidence for me that IT IS POSSIBLE and that this NA recovery program WORKS! I did not have to look any further. Hope replaced my despair. Faith replaced my fear.

Some of the things I did as a struggling newcomer were:

Made a NA recovery meeting everyday with as much commitment as I had towards making sure that I get my drugs everyday smile.gif

Sharing my problems and issues with other members at these meetings and also one-on-one with members before and after these meetings. Might seem very difficult to do at first, to open our mind and trust another human being, but nevertheless I was so desperate and wanting to stay clean that it didn't matter to me how I felt about it, I just DID it.

Got phone numbers from other members and started using them whenever I felt overwhelmed with thoughts of using something to numb, alter or change the way I felt physically, mentally and emotionally.

Made an honest attempt to accept the fact that whatever information I have gathered and processed in my life till that point might not necessarily be true, that it might be a very limited perception that is blocking my growth in life. Instead, deciding to open my mind to what the members are sharing at these meetings, to the possibility that what they are sharing might be true, learning new things, welcoming fresh perspectives and ideas, trying to gain a personal understanding and awareness by identifying and relating to what others share in NA... This is the most rewarding and fruitful process for me and I'm sure for many others in NA.

Get hold of NA literature books, a collection of recovery experiences of hundreds and thousands of addicts from all over the world, and start reading them. Every single line of these books talked about me, the way I have been using drugs, the way I thought, felt and behaved, and of course, the HOW of dealing with this illness that I suffer from, the recovery process etc. Some of these books that you might want to acquire are [1] Basic Text [2] Just For Today [3] It Works How & Why and of course, a series of Information Pamphlets and Booklets that are also available. You can check get these from the website www.na.org or from the service committee of your local NA fellowship in your town.

I also identified a few members with whom I feel comfortable with, spent a lot of time with them apart from the meetings either in person if possible or through phone, also through internet like you're doing now, and further identified a recovering member who could guide me through the process of working the 12 Steps in my daily life and asked for Sponsorship (a term used for such a relationship in NA).

sorry my keyboard for some strange reason stopped working, so I had to post till what I had shared above, and restart my comp...

You can also use these online NA recovery resources on a daily basis as a support for your recovery, apart from the face-to-face support you can get in your town hopefully from the NA fellowship there...

You can read from the entire book of Basic Text online at the following link...

Welcome to NA - http://www.na.org/pdf/litfiles/us_english/IP/EN3122.pdf

For the Newcomer - http://www.na.org/pdf/litfiles/us_english/IP/EN3116.pdf

There are more of these booklets and pamphlets that you might want to read also at the following link - http://www.na.org/ips/eng/index.htm

You can also search and locate a NA meeting near where you live by using the following link - http://portaltools.na.org/portaltools/MeetingLoc/

Try out the online meetings here at this group that take place every night at 10 PM (EST). You can enter this chatroom through this link...

http://www.12stepforums.net/na/nachat.html

You need to have Java software in order to make use of these chatrooms and participate in these meetings... you can download it for free from the following link...

See there's so much of help available today for those suffering addicts who have a desire to stop using drugs. We are really fortunate to have all this help and support system today. Many of our fellow addicts in the past years were not so fortunate.

And yes, lastly, but most importantly, there is no such thing as advice that I have seen given in Narcotics Anonymous. All that is shared here is the "Experience, Strength and Hope" of addicts who have paid the price of pain while active addiction and today have found a way to live clean, free from having to use drugs, and recovering at physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual level on a daily basis with the help of the NA program. This is our hard-earned personal experience. IT WORKS!

WELCOME HOME, KEEP COMING BACK, WE ALL NEED EACH OTHER, TOGETHER WE DO RECOVER!

Hi,
My names Dusti, and im 17 years old. I am also an opiate addict. My DOC is heroin, methadone, and oxy contin. I HIGHLY recommend not doing this on your own!!! You may think you can, but thats your addiction talking to you. I thought i could do it on my own too, then before i knew it was doing even more to feel the exact same high. It's not worth it. Honestly its not. You should deff. go get some help. If you're worried about the withdraw, then definately go to DETOX. You may think it's a silly idea, but its so worth it!!

Well said Dusti, I agree with you.

I CAN'T BUT WE CAN! Never Alone, never again...

Hey Missy,
Don't put off on tomorrow...what you can do today! When the pain gets great enough you will do something differnt. When you are tired of being sick & tired. True enough our literature states the only requirement for membership is the desire to stop using. Keep coming back & don't leave till the miracle happens. We are a "just for today" program. You do not have to do this alone. I too, tried  myself for years before I got clean, but could not do it alone....I had to reach out for help at a detox facililty, then attend meetings upon my release. I did 90 meetings in 90 days, got a sponsor, and alot of phone #'s. I read our literature, and I work the steps. That is how it has worked for me. Our message is hope & our promise is freedom from active addiction. An addict, any addict can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use, and find a new way to live.
