NA INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY BULLETIN #4 (REVISED JUNE 1997)
REPRINTING NA FELLOWSHIP-APPROVED LITERATURE

Policy and guidelines for the reprinting of the NA Fellowships copyrighted literature by individual NA members, groups, service boards, and committees. Also describes how reprint requests from individuals who are not NA members and from non-NA organizations will be handled. Developed by the trustee of NAs Fellowship Intellectual Property Trust.

This bulletin was developed to further explain some statements made in the Fellowship Intellectual Property Trust and in NA Intellectual Property Bulletin #1, Internal Use of NA Intellectual Property.

Requirements for use by NA groups
Only NA groups have the authority under IP Bulletin #1 to reproduce fellowship-approved recovery literature in certain instances. When preparing to reproduce NA Fellowship-approved recovery literature, we suggest that NA groups discuss the Fourth Tradition and follow these six general guidelines:

  1. An NA group shall only reproduce NA Fellowship-approved recovery literature when it has a clear need to do so.
  2. NA Fellowship-approved recovery literature reproduced by an NA group should be distributed only within that group. Such materials should always be given away free of charge; they should never be sold to generate income.
  3. The text of NA Fellowship-approved books and pamphlets reproduced by an NA group should not be altered or modified in any way.
  4. The copyright for the item being reproduced should be shown prominently as follows: Copyright (c) [year of first publication by NAWS], Narcotics Anonymous World Services, Inc. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.
  5. As long as the conditions of IPB# 1 and this IPB# 4 are met, no advance permission is required. Groups need not, but are encouraged to, register themselves with the World Service Office.
  6. In the event that there is any conflict relating to the enforcement or interpretation of this bulletin, the procedure outlined in IP Bulletin #5, Conflict Resolution Within the NA Fellowship, will govern.

Requirements for reprinting by NA service boards and committees
Registered NA area or regional service boards and committees that wish to quote or reprint portions of NA Fellowship-approved literature are granted permission to do so in IP Bulletin #1, Internal Use of NA Intellectual Property, so long as the following requirements are followed:

  1. The proper notation or credit identifying the origin of the quote or reprinted portion must always be included.
  2. The length of the reprint or quote should never exceed 25% of the original piece. In the case of NA books, reprints or quotes should never exceed 25% of a single chapter or section.
  3. Articles from The NA Way Magazine may be reprinted in their entirety if the source is fully cited.
  4. The copyright for the item being reproduced should be shown prominently as follows: Copyright (c) [year], Narcotics Anonymous World Services, Inc. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.
  5. The NA service board or committee should be currently registered with the World Service Office.
  6. Each area and regional service board and committee is held and agrees to be responsible for their respective subcommittees use of NAs intellectual properties.
  7. In the event that there is any conflict relating to the enforcement or interpretation of this Bulletin, the procedure outlined in IP Bulletin #5, Conflict Resolution Within the NA Fellowship, will govern.

So long as these requirements are met, no specific advance permission is necessary.

Requirements for reprinting by individuals or non-NA organizations
Individuals or non-NA organizations must secure permission, in writing, from the World Service Office before they may quote or reprint portions of NA Fellowship-approved material. The following are the parameters within which such permission may be granted:

  4. The copyright for the item being reproduced should be shown prominently as follows: Copyright © [year of first publication by NAWS], Narcotics Anonymous World Services, Inc. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.
  5. A request for permission to reprint, outlining the material to be reprinted and describing the intended use, should be directed to NAWS, PO Box 9999, Van Nuys CA 91409 USA prior to its publication. Any such request will be responded to as quickly as possible, and certainly in no more than thirty days after NAWS receipt of the request. NA World Services has the sole and unaffected discretion to deny permission if it feels that the use would be, in any way, inappropriate or not desirable.

The requesting party should send NAWS a copy of the finished article or paper that includes the quote or reprinted portion of the NA Fellowship-approved literature.

This document is published by NA World Services in accordance with its duties as described in Article V, Section 1:1 of the Fellowship Intellectual Property Trust Instrument and Article IV, Sections 4-7 of the Trust Operational Rules, approved by the Fellowship of Narcotics Anonymous as given voice by its groups through their regional service representatives at the World Service Conference on 27 April 1993, and revised by the regional service representatives at the World Service Conference on 30 April 1997 and 27 April 1998. This bulletin is subject to revision at any time and supersedes any previous versions. For more information, contact NA World Services, PO Box 9999, Van Nuys CA 91409 USA, Tel: (818) 773-9999

Hi Folks,,, heres a response from NAWS !!

Hello Raman It is good to hear from you. I am doing well.
In response to your question, members will want to remember that any reproduction of NA copyrighted recovery literature is in conflict with copyright law and the conscience of the NA Fellowship. As an alternative we suggest linking to any of the resources at www.na.org That approach is not in conflict with copyright restrictions. For more on this topic you may want to read and share the resource at the following link: http://www.na.org/legal/ipbul4-03rv.htm

Thanks again for writing Raman. Feel free to follow-up with any additional thoughts or questions.

I dont see any trouble at all as long as those guidelines are followed.

ha.ha, ha, VINI !!
Right on Bro !!

I think all they want us to do is denote the source,, and not post over 25 percent of a particular !
I have no more comments or positions,, all I want is for all of us here to know reality !!
So to that effect the mail from The Fellowship ServicesTeam solves all disputes and debate on whats right and wrong regarding posting of NA approved literature !

So to that effect the mail from The Fellowship ServicesTeam solves all disputes and debate on whats right and wrong regarding posting of NA approved literature!

Did you miss the part that said we could use it for our group?  The fact that as long as we gave it away freely, there were no problems?

Come on, this is a place people come to learn.  We can always tell them to go read at www.na.org or we can share our ES&H on "posted literature" because for this addict, that's how I have learned.

Sure, I can and do read the literature on my own at home; but do I really get the true meaning of it; that meaning intended?  Or do I put my own selfish thoughts into it, read into it exactly what I want to read into it?

This can be very dangerous position for some; reading meanings into things that aren't really there.

So if we post and discuss materials, is there any right or wrong to it?

I mean, I get sick of people pushing a point to this place of right or wrong myself.  According to NA's literature:

We believe that our Higher Power will take care of us. If we honestly try to do God's will to the best of our ability, we can handle the results of anything that happens. Seeking our Higher Power's will is a spiritual principle found in the steps. Working the steps and practicing the principles simplifies our lives and changes our old attitudes. When we admit that our lives had become unmanageable, we don't have to argue our point of view. We have to accept ourselves as we are. We no longer have to be right all the time. When we give ourselves this freedom, we can allow others to be wrong. Freedom to change seems to come mainly after our acceptance of ourselves.

Let Go and Let God :)

Im with you Vini,,,,
all the best !!
Glora,,please be my friend too,,
As we go on in recovery we learn to use a faculty called discernment !!
I simply believ that its ok for me to bring my viewpoint too,, just like everybody else has !!
So why should I not be allowed to do so without being judged !!
Well heres another mail I got this evening from the Fellowship team=
"

"Thank you Raman. It may be helpful to consider that this is not a money issue for the NA Fellowship, but rather a copyright issue. The fellowship, through the WSC, has expressed their interest in protecting those recovery literature copyrights, and NA World Services supports that group conscience decision. Most members dont realize that reproduction of copyrighted material actually can cause the loss of that copyright which can then result in anyone changing and reproducing NA literature as they see fit. This is clearly not what the NA Fellowship wants. In any case, we appreciate all efforts to help others understand the complexities of this issue. "

After all,,,understand Im not trying to convince you about whats right and wrong,,just sharing what I think and what I have gathered on this very sensitive topic !!
Now if you continue to be offended and sick because of what i post here inspite of me trying to clear the air about who I am really and what I am (other than the gossip you may have heard or read about me),,, then thats ok too,,, because thats your problem then ,,, not mine !!
Best wishes to you and good day !!

A thought to consider...the internet and this board are very public places. The way the "group exemption" was explained to me was that we could use the literature within the group; not post it ( or give it away) where it would be available to the general public. I am the web-servant for my area, so I have spent some time researching this topic. Even on official NA Area Service Committee sites, we need to post links to the literature on na.org rather than the copyrighted materials themselves, keeping in mind the permitted 25%, when fully attributed.

I think that if the copyrighted material were placed in a section of the board that only registered members could access, then, PERHAPS, it could be argued that it was only being used by the group and was not available to the general public. NA's WSO does not recognize, at this time, any "group" that does not meet at a minimum of once a year in a physical location.

There is a camp out held in my Region that meets once a year...their only meeting.... and they are recognized by NAWS as a group.

Hey Raman! I could almost be mad at you :) LOL

You said: "other than the gossip you may have heard or read about me"

What I know about you is by reading what you write. I am not a person who listens to or carries gossip!! That wouldn't be very nice of me, now would it? ~smiles~

I probably just get carried away with my passion for this program; I have read so much of the history of NA that sometimes, I see things that to me, don't seem right. I tend to be one who may want to make sure my two cents is put in as far as topics go. The materials that are copyrighted, well, I can understand their protection but as a group, I tend to think that the suggestion Lon brought up is a good one. I just want to know that I, as well as you all, have carried the message to the best of our ability and for me, that is by using the literature!! :)

As for who and what you are or any of that, what I know is you are Raman :) That's about it LOL

Oh, and you play music in a band!! I know that too :)

NA ROCKS :)
