New Horizons

"My life is well-rounded and I am becoming a more comfortable version of myself, not the neurotic, boring person that I thought I'd be without drugs."

Basic Text p.262

Is there really life without drugs? Newcomers are sure that they are destined to lead a humdrum existence once they quit using. That fear is far from reality.

Narcotics Anonymous opens the door to a new way of life for our members. The only thing we lose in NA is our slavery to drugs. We gain a host of new friends, time to pursue hobbies, the ability to be stabley employed, even the capacity to pursue an education if we so desire. We are able to start projects and see them through to completion. We can go to a dance and feel comfortable, even if we have two left feet. We start to budget money to travel, even if it's only with a tent to a nearby campsite. In recovery, we find out what interests us and pursue new pastimes. We dare to dream.

Life is certainly different when we have the rooms of Narcotics Anonymous to return to. Through the love we find in NA, we begin to believe in ourselves. Equipped with this belief, we venture forth into the world to discover new horizons. Many times, the world is a better place because an NA member has been there.

Just for today: I can live a well-rounded, comfortable life-a life I never dreamt existed. Recovery has opened new horizons to me and equipped me to explore them.

This is one of my favorite JFT that I've read so far. This is exactly how i felt when i came in, but ironically i WANTED some boredom in my life lol. My life had been such a circus of jails and ambulances and hospitals and fights and suicide attempts and overdoses that when i cleaned up the last thing in the world I wanted was excitement. I kind of imagined having some kind of quiet monastic life and that actually sounded good.

For the first week or so.

But my how much that has changed. Since I've gotten clean i had gone camping, fishing, learned how to knit, learned how to embroider, (which to me is FUN though it may sound boring to you guys lol). The other day when i was driving back from the lake and i saw some horses and i was thinking man I would love to go horseback riding some day, i wonder if theres horseback-riding lessons? Even though i grew up in texas, I've never been on a horse, we don't all wear cowboy hats and ride horses :P
Then i realized, now that I'm clean something like that is actually possible. It is entirely feasible that I could go take one of those little riding classes where you follow a guide through some of the park trails around here.
And this may sound silly but I've always wanted to take up archery, even though its expensive, but that too is entirely possible to have as a goal. I could actually do that one day if i stay clean.

That is freedom from active addiction. I no longer have to obsess about drugs, drugs are no longer my life. I have all these little projects started because I'm trying to figure out what it is I like to do. I've got this whole world opened up to me and its like a playground with all these new experiences and its certainly not boring!
