The danger of road bikes

Well, in two short months I know of two people killed riding motorcycles. If you own one or know of someone who does please think of moving on, or asking them to sell it. Believe me I know the excitement and passion that motorcyclists have. I use to race MX and have won many events, offroading. Road machines are a different story. I'm not trying to offend anyone, I just want to help save a life.

Statistically it's true motorcyclists are about 30 times as likely to die in an accident than if in a car. Yet I know numerous riders in their 60's and 70's who have be safety conscience riders all their lives some for over half a century. For the record I am not one of them. The highest death rate is among young (reckless) male riders who may have survived their stupidity if in a car. I know I survived 4 near fatal car accidents between the ages of 18 & 26 - all while using. But if I would have killed myself riding loaded on a motorcycle it would not have been the bikes fault but yes would have been another statistic!

I don't ride out of respect for my wife's wishes, her father was killed in a motorcycle versus semi incident ~40 years ago. IMO he would most likely have died if in a car too though if hit by a semi with the driver falling asleep at the wheel.

Competent riders are less likely to have accidents because they:

  1. See more
  2. Evade better
  3. Attend more
  4. Assume less

I have wanted a bike pretty bad but fought off the temptation, when I was a teen I knewa couple who road and they got hit t boned one day he died and she lost her husband and a leg it was pretty horrible. I have a quad though LOL and its dangerous i dont do anything crazy on it matter of fact its been sitting 2 years now and I need to get rid of it. I have a friend I went to high school with and he crashed and landed head first into a curb, ended up with brain damage and though he survived he was like he had had a stroke. No no bikes for me my bum knee wouldn't hold me up anyhow ...

Quads??!!!! If you want off road fun go motorcycle. Quads way like twice as much, and when you high side a turn they squish you. Other issue with trikes and quads....... is when you hit a bump that's not head on, the back will try to throw you

I had a Husky 125 and it was an amazing ride. The best metals you can get, especially compared to Japan bikes. But I did move onto a Honda Elsinore 125 and it had more power and weighed 25 pounds less. Of course this was 40 years ago! Here's hoping things work out for you!!

When i was a kid I had a few Suzukis my buddy who's dad bought him anything he wanted got a 250 husky, that bike had 5 gears? it was so powerful you could wheely in every gear bike scared the hell outta me :)

We have gangs of guys who ride enduros but their Elite, they mostly have BMW's and they are EEExpensive.

There are plenty of reasonably priced bikes on craigslist I just need to get rid of the quad first then i'll make a move in January maybe :)

Yeah tons of torque, 250s scared me too. My buddy had a Husky 360 'cross' that had 8 speeds, four low and four high. Flat out seemed like 80 mph. For me, cycle weight was super important. That's why I think kids lose control of 1200+ cc bikes, and end up unable to control the bike when they go into a corner too fast.
