marijuana and an honest program

Hello, my name is Rachel and this is my first post on the NA forum, and i have a question about marijuana, only because there is alot of controversy over it in my region. First and foremost, i live in a region where marijuana is medical and alot of people feel as though that is just another form of justification. (I.e oxycotin is perfectly legal if you simply have the prescription in your name, but does not change the fact that it is, without a doubt, a narcotic.) i am a recovering IV drug user. I still from time to time, smoke marijuana as i find myself using it for things like pain management, and night terrors. Does this mean i am not working an honest recovery? Have i not really earned my coins and keytags? Some say no, that marijuana is a gateway to our DOC and that its a mind altering substance. Some have told me that Iv drugs and marijuana are differnt sports; and some tell me its all about personal recovery. I am fairly new in my recovery and would love everyones imput, as working this program to the best of my ability is the only thing that will relieve meof the bondage of self.

Hi Peanut, my names Mike I'm a grateful Recovering addict. In my using days used many different drugs during a time overseas slammin' China White indeed my drug of choice. In my state pot is legal. So is alcohol so what, alcohol is just a liquid drug. For me good 'ol Mother Nature Herb most definitely is not ok. Complete abstinence from all drugs has been the foundation of my Recovery since 11-27-1980.

I agree with what Mike said. For me, it doesn't matter whether a drug is legal or not, or even whether it has been prescribed to me. What matters is how it affects my mind or mood. For me, marijuana is definitely a drug. In fact, it was my drug a choice. I would smoke pot all day, everyday. I did drank alcohol and did other drugs too, but marijuana was the thing for me. It is definitely a mind and mood altering substance. In fact, that's why I smoked so much pot: I liked the way it changed my mood and mind.

Thanks for the feed back. Its been 2 weeks since my last toke and 39 days since my "last blast". I first had my reservations for marijuana, but I've found in the last few weeks that a meeting is so much better then smoking a bowl. Its progress not perfection, right?

Absolutely right. We used for so long, ANY curtailment is a step in the right direction. The ONLY requirement for membership is a DESIRE to stop using. For me, it took 8-9 months of meetings before I finally gave up everything. My 39 year run ended the day I finally asked for help.

I 100% agree the ONLY requirement for membership is the DESIRE to stop using. I went to 2 to 3 meetings a day for 3 weeks getting loaded before and after every meeting before the Miracle happened. I was given a most precious gift: the choice not to use given to me by a Power Greater then myself. (read my story) Before the chains were broken by HP & NA I had no choice, I used to live and lived to us, not just a saying it was and had been my way of life for a long time. Now Clean from all drugs since November 27, 1980.

That said half measures availed us nothing. I've seen countless people come in and out, some returning many not. I've seen people with time hold onto Reservations only to relapse years even decades later. I've seen people with substantial time commit suicide behind Reservations.

Total Surrender equals Winning for me.
