Sharing the good and Praying for a positive!

Hello everyone!!

My son, drunk at 11am this morning, came to me and said "I think I need help with my drinking"!!!

I'm euphoric yet prepared at the same time for this to be the first of many declarations (is that wrong or too negative?)

By no means has he committed himself to sobriety but at least he's expressed an interest and was receptive to me contacting a good friend and AA alum to assist him.

Since I only know my secretive world of counselling and self-help NA I thought it was best to let him speak to someone more familiar with meetings and AA in our community.

Regardless, I think it's probably a good thing that I'm not in the thick of it... he needs to do this for himself and let go the apron strings.

I know within there's a confident, sober young man who has faith in himself as well as God... I'm just praying that the responsible, committed young man is there too.

His physical/mental health and addiction journey has been arduous and a stressful one for me and the family so I'm hoping this will be the first step forward!

Your prayers are appreciated, kd

I also wanted to mention that I've recently trained and have now recieved my Mental Health First Aid Certification.  Though I pray I never have to use it, I live in a community where poor mental health, drug and alcohol addiction run rampant, especially among our youth.  There's been a few times I would have handled my son differently had I been a little more atuned to his state of mind.  I encourage anyone who feels they live or work in high risk environments to check it out.  I'm unsure of availability in the US but here in Canada it's primarily available to businesses/front line employees.

Hello Kitty and blessings of this day

That is a positive sign from your son and I believe it is best to "live in the day"WE can help with information and support but that all important"not only admission but acceptance"has to come from the individual. Always in support and prayer and we know with God's grace and mercy there is always HOPE...congratulations on your recent accomplishment in attaining your Mental Health First Aid certificate.WE certainly help ourselves as we reach out to help others.I believe I have mentioned I worked for 35 years in the field of "People with Disabilities before we moved south 3 years ago...Was the most rewarding job I ever had,,it was a LIFE JOURNEY NOT JUST A JOB..and I learned much...WE do what we do in our own way and our own time guided by that Power greater than ourselves, the God of our own understanding. As an addict,I often thought I would have seem my sons 7 long painful hard core heroin years coming..Even with all my own experience,we still enabled more than we should have but found the strength through our God,,,allowing the timber to fall,,knowing from  our own evidence what it takes and yet still difficult with your own children.Having someone in recovery help your son is a great idea as you step back and let him find his way..God bless,be strong,,stick in the Solution and each day be grateful you are still able to show the way through your own journey of daily recovery....smilesmile

It is a positive sign. You have to be hopeful but also realistic. He could go back and forth and twist and turn but at least for now he is having a realization.

Thanks for your support and guess who's drinking again already?
Not upset about something I wasn't expecting, just deflated.
On to tomorrow! I have two exams Friday and I'm staying focused on that.

....and what a good role-model -that- is! One day at a time,,he 'll realize that he's at the wheel now, responsible for his choices and receiver of his own consequences!
